Question about 2005 BMW R 1200 C Montauk

2 Answers

Havy A friend of mine has a bmw r 1200 . When she starts it, it cranks once or twice as if it doesn't have enough juice. If she opens the choke, it'll start right away. I checked the battery and the generator which are both fine. The battery is holding at 13 volts, which is above the manual's requirement of 12.8 volts and the generator is putting out at 13.9 volts (the manual indicates 14 volts as good). The next step is to check the stator coil resistance then if all is good, it suggests replacing the rectifier. But I'd hate for her to have to purchase a new rectifier only to discover it's still doing it, though, we may not have a choice. Anyone ever experience this and/or have any suggestions what to check for?

Hi i would remove the battery and take it to your local dealer where thay should have a battery test unit this will highlight or eliminate any battery problems before an expensive replacement

If it was mine, I'd replace the battery. It could have a shorted cell which would cause it to show good voltage but low output. Only way to know is to replace it.

My 1989 honda gl 1500 gold wing wont start in cold weather, it cranks over

Mine does the same thing. I put a new gel battery with high cold cranking amps from Advanced Auto Parts. Look to spend 100 bucks. Choke at full choke and it starts right up now. Gold Wings are cold natured. I own 2 and both are. But the battery took care of the cold starts.

After a short ride (10 miles or so) and the motorcylcle has been at rest for an hour or so, when I try to restart the engine it will turn over but not start. Most recently I've had the engine just stop...

welcome to the world of harleys,, I had the same problem,, the dealer explained it to me like this,, they take a ton of amps to crank them over due to the high compression ,, so short rides will lower the voltage to a point it just doesn't have the power to crank it over enough or fast enough to actually start them,, I use a trickle charger on mine now when Its in the garage all week, and make it a point to ride longer with fewer short trips

My BMW R1100RT is difficult to start. Must use full choke, give full throttle once and then hit the start button. It then starts just when I let go of the start button. Often it refuses to start and then...

The choke actually just opens the throttle bodies a little (the bike is fuel injected). Try using putting on the 'choke', then pressing the start button, but dont touch the throttle. Does it start ok? Also, when started, if you use the 'choke' does it increase the engine speed? If it does not, then you need to set it up correctly.
Let us know how you get on.

Starting problem, clocks light up engin turns softly. not starting. please assist. contact please if anyone can assist, its a friends bike.

make sure that your battery is fully charged to have enough cranking juice. It happened to my VFR as well, headlights & clock worked but not enough juice to crank. I had this problem with my OEM honda battery, and eventually replaced with aftermarket battery with higher CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). A good thing esp if you live in cold countries

1998 BMW R 1100 RT starter won't turn over. Bike won't start.

Alex ,
the battery is not your problem . it sound more like the starter motor giving you grief or alternator or regulator .
The electronic system on these are Bosch which are very sensitive to fluctuations of power .
Now when your starter draw power it really sucks power out of your battery and hopefully you have enough for the rest of the appliances .
the hard line of all this is that the battery may look good and hold the charge for a while but once the starter motor draw power to start the bike , you have very little power left to service the rest of power needed for the electronics . Make sure the alternator give you enough charge , test it while running , it should give you between 13.5 V to 14.8 V output or see if you accelerate the bike the headlight becomes brighter . If the light stays dole or dimms while giving a bit of gas , your alternator or regulator has a problem and will have to be tested and replaced .
have a look at all this and let me know how you go

I start bike by using choke on cold start after 2 minutes once I push in choke engine stalls can you help?

hi nl friday,

here is a trick i learned from a friend who is a great fan of V twins.

on cold starts he usually opens the drain plug to let the carb balancer / floater set. once a few drops comes out, open the choke then start the engine. right after pushing the choke back, twist the throttle to force the jet to spray out.

hope this will work for you.

you could use a spark plug put it in place of the spark plug there on your s.p wire. Or, you could just unscrew the plug from the engine, but plugged into the wire and crank it over
