Question about 2004 BMW K 1200 RS

1 Answer

Fuel pump Hi.i have bmw k 1200 rs ..After sitting in my garage all winter, I have been trying to start my bike. I thought I was getting fuel, because when I checked the injectors they were spraying fuel and everything looked good. New plugs and good spark, but no go. A shot of starting fluid and she roars for 3 seconds...so I think it has to be the fuel. Now I already had fresh gas in the tank,so I wanted to drain the lines. I pulled the lines off just ahead of the fuel injectors thinking when I turned on the key, the electric fuel pump would pump out the old gas. Nothing Can someone help?

Can you hear the pump when you turn the key on normally? When the pump on my old FJ starts up with the key, it makes enough racket to let you know. Your bike is alot smarter than mine, it might be able to tell that the lines are unhooked and preventing the pump from working as a safety thing. Is the fuel line made of or contain any metal? It may need to see continuity in the fuel system to allow the pump to operate. Or some other parameter is not being met with the lines disconnected. Have you tried thumbing the starter with the lines off? The bike might only pressurize the system when the engine is starting or running.... actually, this is my best guess now that I think of it.

Hi, Martin the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, O2, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.

As this point you can't get the bike to turn over is this correct? If the engine is turning over but won't start then yes the gas is most likely the problem. Gas after sitting for even a month can evaporate from the fuel system and it leave a fouls smelling deposit behind that clogs up everything. It stinks and it's a mess to clean out. To prevent this from happening use a product that is called "Fuel Stabilizer" in the last few tanks of gas before you put the bike away for the winter or a dormant period. If the motorcycle is in a hot climate or heated garage this foul smelling gas can happen within a few weeks.

Even in the winter the engine gets hot enough to switch on the electric fan

Hi, Spikey1962 and the usual suspects are:
1. Low coolant level.
2. Restricted radiator air flow.
3. Faulty thermostat.
4. Coolant pump or fans inoperative.
5. Vent hose crimped.
6. Air in the coolant.

My 2003 suzuki gsxr won't star has been sitting in the garage for three months without starting it cranks over pretty good, did I choke the engine with too much gas trying to start it?

Hi from Spain,

no way to choke this fuel injected bike in theory....but by my experience try to start the bike with fully open throttle several times, take care do not flat the battery, if the bike has not much fuel do not try with the bike on the side stand so the fuel cannot reach the fuel pump inlet.

BR,

Emilio.

A lot of chatter when the bike is idleing and it seams to be missing

Have the bike tuned i.e. get the carbs synchronised, this smooths out the engine, increases performance & decreases fuel consumption.

Good Luck
Hope this helps.
