Question about 2008 BMW K 1200 GT

1 Answer

Oil issue So I changed the oil on my k 1200 gt last night and my Clymers tells me that the motor wants 2.5 litres of oil. I gave it 2.5 litres and then ran the bike for a minute or so. The oil level on the dipstick only registers to the midpoint on the cross hatched oil level indicator. Is this and indication of a rebuilt motor? Should I add more oil? I should also point out that I checked immediatley after changing the oil and again this mornin' with the idea that more oil may have drained down from the top end of the motor. I followed the book's instructions for checking oil, with the dip stick unscrewed and resting on the top of the fill hole. Kinda curious about what to do. Thanks all.

Was that with, or without, the filter change? It's possible that you are checking the spec for not having changed the filter. A fresh filter will require more oil. My $.02 - If it's in the marks, it's good to go.

1997 harley davidson 1340 evo engine has no oil pressure

MY 1995 1340 evo roadking oil light stays on at idle when the engine is hot, I've chenged the oil and filter using genuine harley davidson, changed the oil pressure switch and even done a full engine flush with 4 litres of flush oil which as made the oil light stay on until 1200 RPM's, before i flushed the system the light would go off at a round 1000/1100 rmp's.

Dyna streetbob rear axle and spacers

I recommend to anyone wishing to do even minor work on their own Harley, buy the shop manual. With clear instructions I have been able to do a lot of work that would have cost more than the manual. Since the year 2000 I have replaced seals in the front forks, brake pads, and done all the oil changes myself which I know would have cost a lot more at the dealer. The manual is very detailed and gave me the confidence I could do those things safely and not have to worry about something going wrong on the road.

Because my older 2000 manual may not be accurate for your newer 2007 I am reluctant to tell you how to proceed other than to recommend you get a manual. If the cost of a shop manual is now prohibitively expensive try a Clymers manual. I believe I saw them on the internet for less than $40.

Last time I checked that won't even pay for one hour at the Harley shop. But there are some things that should be left to the factory trained techs.

I would never try a job like that without a manual. Too much chance of a serious problem. Try finding a Clymers if the Harley shop manual is too expensive.

Hi,

You made a mistake sorry, should have not put oil in. Take it straight back to shop, ask them on phone what type of oil they put in, say you want it in writing. Don't tell them why yet. Then, with a witness, drain some oil as a sample, get witness to keep it. Then take bike to shop and tell them what happened. Drain oil sample at shop to compare, if they don't rebuild your motor, tell them you have a sample to take to analyst etc etc.

Thanks,

Adam.

Low gear stuttering

It sounds like your bike is burning oil due to rings getting old or sleeves to the valves are warned out .
check how smoky your kawa is first .
if at high revs your bike is smoky heavely your rings could be getting tired or valves guides are warned .

Will a sump off a 600 bandit fit a 1200

The pumps have different part numbers > The 600 is #16400-06B01 and the 1200 is 16400-06B20
Chances are, even if the pump "fits", the 600 will not have the volume of oil flow needed for the 1200 motor. Starve the 1200 of oil and plan on a new engine in the near future. Sorry.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Oil

Also check that bike is properly positioned. Is bike on level ground? With most bikes oil is checked on center stand or holding bike upright not on side stand. Also check manual some bikes say to check hot very few with cold motor. (many bikes with oil tanks will fill up crankcase and appear empty if checked cold especially after sitting for a long time) Most will say to wait a period of time after turning off motor (usually between 10 and 30 min.) but some say to check immediately after turning off. ,
