Question about 1988 BMW K 100 RT

1 Answer

Fuel starvation

I´m after some technical advice...I have a K100 RT 85\´model that will not start. All checks point to fuel starvation. I have checked and cleaned the injectors, fuel pump & filter, pressure regulator with no luck. I\´ve even blocked the return hose for more pressure. My question is how much pressure does the fuel pump need to pump out to achieve a decent size spray of fuel from the injectors? Any response relating to the above query will be highly appreciated.

I have a 1985 k100rt and it would not start. i made some calls to bobs bmw in maryland and i unplugged electrical connector on gas tank ,sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner and coated it with dielectric gel. that fixed it. also check main grounding point on frame under gas tank.on a bike this old you need to make sure electrical connections are clean. the fuel pump is supposed to deliver fuel at 36 psi according to clymers repair manual. i hope this helped .

Hi, Karl the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, O2, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. . Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
10. Fuel tank empty.
11. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.

85 BMW K100RT fuel leaks when I use the choke. I see the end of the arm opposite the cable pushes on something but am not sure what it is. Any suggestions?

the k100 has no choke fitted to it,,,there is a leaver that lifts the inlet butterflys but no choke as you call it,,its all fule injected,,,
when the engine is cold the engine temp censor tells the fule computer to inritch the fule mix so the engine will start up easy
therefor you need to run the engine till its warm before the temp censor turns off the extra fule however have a look on this web sight,,,www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com....this will help you out

85 bmw starter does not engage it goes zing

probably find that the dog clutch on the end of the starter has given up the ghost, failing that, bmws are critical on the grade of oil used and if you have used a mineral rather than synthetic oil the dog clutch will be gummed up with deposits, sometimes a hot engine flush and new oil(synthetic)will fix it,hope this helps
