Will say doctor for drive.

I have a new Garmin Nuvi 260 W. The voice behind the directions would say "Shadyview Doctor" instead of "Shadyview Drive". She does it every time when a street name is a Drive.

    accademy drive---garmin says accademy doctor

  • taylor43 Dec 06, 2008

Mine says doctor as well, but only if DR(drive) is followed by a directional value such as NW(northwest). If there is no text, directional value, etc. after DR, it will say drive. Also, does anyone else have the voice "Samantha" on there nuvi260W? I do, and when speaking with Garmin they couldn't understand it. They said "Samantha" should not be on this model, it should be "Jill". Anyway, I spoke directly with an software engineer and they are working on the voice patch for the doctor problem.

  • daleleach Dec 11, 2008

Yes ... my Nuvi does the same thing. You would think a $300 unit would know the difference. Dr is drive not Doctor, especially on a GPS.

Same problem - Nouvi 260 says "Doctor" instead of "Drive" when voicing directions. Anxious to hear of solution and hopefully a free download/patch from Garmin to fix it. Thanks.

Same problem with Nouvi 260 where it pronounces the word "Doctor" instead of "Drive" when stating street names. Hope we get a free download/patch from Garmin.

I got my 260W yesterday and it has the same TTS issue.

If there is a S/W fix, how will you down load it?

The unit did not come with an interface (USB) for a computer.

  • dderrer Dec 29, 2008

I have the Drive and Doctor problem as well. In addtion to this my unit says S T instead of street. Best buy told me to bring mine back to the store for a new one. After reading these posts I'm not sure I should do this. I'm thinking about trading it for a Tom Tom....any thoughts?

Here is what I just received from Garmin Product Support:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be happy to help you with this. Unfortunately, we don't have a fix for that issue yet. As I understand it, it has to do with the way the mapping was coded. This means that the issue won't be resolved until the next mapping update. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help.

Just bought a refurbished 260w on ebay and it came with the most recent updates loaded. I have driven in MIlwaukee and Madison on many roadways and this unit pronounces "Street" as "Street" and "Drive" as "Drive" without any issues at all (it has never said "doctor" instead of Drive). Maybe they have fixed this glitch on their latest released 260's.

I've been going back and forth with Garmin Support on this issue... What follows is the thread of our discussion from latest to earliest. As you can see they are aware of the issue and working it..

Dear PJ,

Please click on the link below to download our WebUpdater program. Once
downloaded, connect the GPS to your computer with the USB cable. Launch
the WebUpdater program to update the GPS software; it will alert you of
any new firmware updates and install them to your device automatically.
After this, agree to the prompt to "Search for additional updates," and
make sure to check for any "Firmware" or "Chipset" files. You do not
need to select the additional voices or vehicle icons at this time;
these are optional.

This program will be in your program files on your computer in a Garmin
folder. I would suggest that you connect your unit and run the program
at least once a month. It only takes a few minutes to check for
updates.

I'm sure the solution is quite simple, but I still find it interesting
that such a simple programming error involving such a very common
map-related naming convention, made it through the product development
and test/debug cycle. I guess given the competitive environment, the
explosive rate of growth in these devices, and the seasonal demand,
there must be great pressure to move a product from development to the
retail shelf as quickly as possible. Still, I'm sure Garmin will move
quickly to fix what some might consider to be an embarassing error which
is no doubt now manifesting itself to thousands of Garmin's new
customers.

Back to the error. According to common usage patterns, 'Dr' as "Doctor"
usually occurs prior to a name in a title such as 'Dr. Smith', whereas
'Dr' as 'Drive' usually occurs after a street name such as 'Sherman
Dr.', although additional descriptive words such as 'east' might follow
in the the later example.

If I were developing the text-to-speech programming, the logic would
interpret 'Dr' to mean 'Drive' by default unless encountered at the
beginning of the text. Then, even if the street were named 'Dr. Smith
Dr.' it would still be prouounced correctly.

As you suggest, updating the map text database to replace 'Dr.' with
'Drive' would also solve the problem and be a quicker fix, but it would
increase the size of the database and make the affected maps more
cluttered and cumbersome to read. Either way, all of the affected users
are going to have to endure the not-so-easy process of registering the
product, iinstalling the various plug-ins and downloading the update.

Thanks again for your follow up. I assume Garmin will notify registered
users when the update is available. Just my observations, no need to
reply. As I said, I love the product.

Thanks,

PJ

Dear PJ,

We are aware of this issue. Basically the text to speech feature is
seeing Dr and reading it as doctor and not drive. The engineers are
working on the issue as well as possibly changing the data on the
mapping.

Thanks for the reply.

FYI It makes the same error regardless of the voice I've selected. If
it is a voice issue, then it is common to all the voices I've tried.
Seems like it is programmed to pronounce 'Dr' as "Doctor". Looks like
the text names use 'Dr" instead of "Drive". I'm thinking that if the
text used 'Drive' instead of 'Dr', the word would be pronounced
correctly.

I created a report as you suggested.

PJ

Check for updates at Garmin. It is probably a problem with the software for that model and others are having the same issue. Hope this helps.

Garmin gps doesn't work when charging with cigarette charger. Instead of the GPS to Navigate it rather shows like there's a data transfer.

Hello,

The proper vehicle power cables for the Garmin nuvi 260 are part numbers 010-10723-06 or 010-11478-03.
The use of improper cables will cause the nuvi to go into mass storage.

We have a Garmin Nuvi 200. We want to know if we can get voice directions usinf street names with this model. ..............Tom (Connecticut)

No, the Nuvi 200 does not have text to speech for street names. You have to go with a higher model to do this, like the Nuvi 260.

Check The system settings, I had to download the newest version of the audio software for the voice to work. The software vanished once and I had to re-download it using the web updater.

Hopefully it will stick around this time.

When I load the new software the voice works.

Re: Not sayinstreet names.
After you turn on your unit touch the wrench icon in the bottom right of the screen, this will take you to a menu which features "Settings" in the upper left of the screen. Touch "settings" and scroll down to "language" by using the up and down buttons in the lower right of the screen (down 1 should do it). Touch "Language" and in the voice category find and select "American English - Jill (TTS)". This is the voice that will give you Text To Speech (TTS) speaking the street names in English. If you prefer Spanish or French, find the appropriate catergories with "(TTS)" beside them - "Espanol Americas - Paulina (TTS)" and "Francais Canadien - Julie (TTS)" respectively. Any other selection will only give directional instructions such as "turn left in XXX".

After you have selected your voice press "OK" and back out to your main menu showing "Where to?" and View Map".

Now, when you navigate, you should hear an American female voice giving you directions by street name - assuming your volume is high enough to hear it.

RE: The computer icon displaying when you try to use your unit in the car with the 12 VDC cord.
You probably have a problem with the cord. The pin length in the USB style connector is critical and if it doesn't match up just right the GPS thinks it is hooked up to a computer. If you know someone who has a Garmin NUVI try using their cord and see if you have the same problem. Either way, call Garmin and see if they will send you a replacement cord or otherwise help fix the problem.
