My motor wont start..!

I own a yamaha YZ426F, it wouldnt start and after kicking it for like ever and ever, it started, but then the exhaust (front) went red hot. Literally! Ive tried starting it since but no luck. Ive got fuel to carb and good spark, the tail pipes been checked and its not blocked. What could be my problem..? My dad sugests checking the valves..??

Please please could you help me, i live on a tiny little island (St Helena) where everything has to be imported, we dont have a bike dealer let alone a bike shop, theres no airport (everything is shipped by ships), i dont know what to do and local moto cross annual races are coming up!

  1. The carb has 2 choke knobs, red and black one, black for cold start and red for hot start,I found on my 426 that by pulling the black one every time I try to start the bike, the bike starts hot or cold. When it started press the choke knob back.
  2. A dirty air filter will also make the bike difficult to start.
  3. Do not open the throttle even a bit whilst kicking it,the carb tends to flood very easily and then you are going to kick the bike for ever and ever.
  4. The exhaust turning red hot I'd suggest you get the carburator's jetting checked out,it can be because your feul/air mixture is not right and this could also be a factor in your starting problem, but another reason can also be when the bikes stands still whilst idling or even being revd whilst not in motion the engine tends to get very hot very quickly, the bike does not have a electric fan blowing threw the radiator, and if you did not know your exaust system removes between 60-70% of your engines heat,so it will turn red hot if your are not riding so the cold wind can blow over the exhaust and threw the radiator.
  5. You say you get good spark, where did you test it?Did you check the spark plug itself,or only the sparkplug lead,I find the 426 to be very hard on spark plugs, when I find my 426 difficult to start the first thing I change is the spark plug and it solved my problem many times.
  6. You also mentioned you have feul "to" carb but do you have feul - carb to engine.
  7. How does the compresion feel when kicking the kickstarter, any lack in compresion could indicate a sticky valve in the open position, the unexperianced rider will not kickstart this bike due to the amense compression these bikes have (Ratio 12.1).
Just a few suggestions I hope one works for you.

First thing i would do is drain the fuel bowl we have had alot of problem with the fuel in the carb going bad. if you get tired of kick starting it you could try to pull start it.
let me know how this works for you

Ive had the same problem. When kicking it over, you should hold onto the break master cylinder cause even the slightest blip on the throttle & its flooded & you'll have a rubber leg in no time. Also when you do finally get it running, Be sure to turn the big black idle knob on the carb up lots & leave it up till well after you have your helmet & gear on, cause if the engine cuts out for any reason after its warm the plug will foul up & another rubber leg will follow. Giving it a couple of good revs just before you kill the engine seems to burn off any excess fuel & prevent plug foul. A pocket full of spark plugs is a must with a yz426, & you want to use the ngk cr8ek plug rather than the ngk cr8e plug that they come with. To sum it all up, black choke knob out(hot or cold), use the decomp leaver to get it to TDC only, dont do what I said not to do & do what I said do. Worked for me hope the same for you!!

Yz 426 was running and thought it was out of gear and let out on the clutch bike died and wont start back up and its hard to kick over even with the compression release lever pulled in whats wrong

Hi, Anonymous you may have transmission-clutch-valve issues for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. 3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets

Exhaust pipe turns red hot Yamaha yzf

Hi, Anonymous a YZ is a motocross bike designed to run flat out that being said if you are strolling down some scenic trail at a slow pace or letting the bike idle for a few minutes your header pipe will turn cherry red, why you ask? It is not a street bike, it is designed for competition and weight is a major factor all necessary components are of the smallest and lightest design necessary to maintain performance under extreme conditions ie. small radiator and inside frame oil reservoir that doesn't get cooled, the majority of your riding needs to be at high speed.

My YZ426F has fuel and spark but refused to start. After kicking it for like ever and ever it started but the exhaust (front) went red hot literally. What could be the problem?

Thankz to the fixya team,
between my dad and i, we managed to solve the problem. Regards to the starting, well all we did was change the plug, the original plug had a faint spark, after fitting the new one, two tries and she started. With regards to the exhaust, well the hot start knob has a valve and this valve has a little spring that operates it. Well this little spring was really knackered and after replacing it with a substitute spring, ive not had any problems since. We reckoned it was getting to much air into the combustion chamber, therefore igniting petrol in the exhaust, (hence the glowing red hot pipe) since we changed that spring, this hasnt happened, we reckon thats the solution to this problem.

Regards

Hudz.
