You have a bent shift fork. The repair means removing the engine from the frame then tearing it down into about 75 parts which will then allow the bent shift fork to be replaced. This is not a job for the amature mechanic. Wish I were there with you to guide the repair.

It sounds like the shifter pawl might not be centered. This is located behind the clutch basket and is a pretty big job to get to, easy adjustment just a pain to get to. You will need a manuel to do it yourself.

make sure you blow out main and pilot jets in carb preferably with an air line

This doesn't sound like bent shift forks. That is a very good thing. If the gearbox has to be opened you would be looking at $1500 to $2000. Checking and fixing it yourself as follows might cost you $20. A dealer would charge $100 to $200 or so. Remove the right side casing and then the clutch. I think you will find a broken gearshift return spring #13 or pin #14, gearshift drum stopper spring #10, or gear shift arm spring #12. Any of these parts can be supplied by Babbitt's.
Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
Look at "GEARSHIFT DRUM" page. I sincerely hope I am correct in the diagnosis. The dealer route really hurts the wallet. Let me know what you find out.

One of two things is happening. One is the cost of a double oil change and filter. The other requires your banks loan officer.
Change gearbox oil and install a new oil filter. Dirt and grit in the oil is binding the gears and shift drum. Ride the bike for a couple of hours. Now drain the oil again and put in fresh oil. This will flush out the dirt and grit. Use 10w40 motor oil. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. If dirty oil is not the problem at least we eliminated the possibility for only the cost of a few quarts of oil.
Now let's talk about that loan officer. The shop is going to charge around $1000 plus to replace a bent shift fork. This is not a repair for the untrained. Sorry.
