Honda VTR 1000 Low fuel sensor problem

I have a 1998 Honda VTR 1000 bike and the low fuel light does not come
on, although I know the light works. Does anyone know how the low fuel
sensor in the tank works ?( or in my case doesnt work)

I removed my tank to have it painted. After installing my tank with no fuel in it the fuel warning light did not come on. I checked continuity through the sensor and it has good continuity. I do have ignition voltage to the instrument cluster.

On most bikes, the fuel level sensor is inside the tank and basically is a dampened float. The entire assembly could be accessed beneath the tank and would be connected by a single connector with two terminals. This pair of wire would then go to the instrumentation/cluster to trigger the fuel level gauge or in your case low level sensor. Often the connector would become loose or the terminals corroded. The sensor inside the tank could be tested with a continuity tester (DVM/VOM)

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Bike had cam chain tensoner and 2 valves replaced, but bike is not running wll, seems to be low in compression, i am dropping gears in bends and the bike feels like an in line 4, just has'nt the same...

Check the valve lash (clearances). If not enough clearance, the valve(s) could be not fully seating which would create the problem you have described.

1998 honda vtr firestorm starting problem

Hi Samantha!

Yepp, i know whats wrong. Its the generator on your bike that dosent work properly. The generator dosen charge your battery. So when your drive the engine, the lights, the flash etc take all the power of the battyre and since the genarator coulden charge it properly it dies.
Buy a new, or if you can find a used, generator and replace it, alternative take the generator to someone that can pull it appart and replace the coals in it. Sometimes thats more expensive to change the coals then it is to buy a used one.

Good luck with your bike
