Question about Ducati Monster 620 Motorcycles

1 Answer

What's a comfortable cruising rev range?

My 2003 Monster 620 is my first bike of more than 250cc capacity ... and I love it, but I still don't really feel I've figured out the most appropriate rev range to sit within if I'm just cruising along in the traffic. Often on my way home from work the traffic will be moving at about 75kph and the bike labours in 4th but sounds a bit like it's screaming in 3rd. I'm obviously aware that it's better to rev a bit high rather than labour the engine. Also, once I'm in 4th or 5th then it sounds really happy just tooling along at 5,000 rpm or higher. I'm trying to be a bit less mathematical about it all and just go by the sound more but it's still a bit touch-and-go getting the gears to mesh smoothly. Do I just need to chill out and get more practice or is there a rev range that the bike really likes to use for extended periods at low to medium speeds?

Ducati 2004 620 monster left standing for months won't start

Hi, Anonymous if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 3 years or older when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and replace the battery.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
6. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
8. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. My 2004 Monster 620 cockpit doesn't light up when I turn the key.

Sounds like you're using a black key that has a damaged chip, so the ICU will not recognized it and has immobilized the bike. Use the red key, or the spare black key if you have it. If you don't have a spare, scrounge the internet for various work arounds, otherwise it's a very costly repair.

the most important thing is to check the oil gauge if it has enough oil not low and not high. also maintain its oil change procedure on it manual and its tune up, use the same gasoline octane every time. then check the brake fluid of the bike for your safety. maintain its cleanliness. and don't run without gasoline and that is a joke. thanks... drive safely...

Questions on 2003 Monster 620 Dark

hm ... let's see ... first the standard disclaimer - I haven't ridden a 620 myself - so take this FWIW 1. Slipping & chattering clutch @ 3-4k does not sound normal. What it could be, I dunno. 2. I haven't run into that either, but I believe it may be the case, unless you're an enterprising wrench. I wouldn't think it to be a big deal, but I'll bet the only way you're going to find out what bulb it is is by taking it apart. 5 gets you 10 that any Ducati 'fiche only shows it as a whole unit - in which case they're not going to know what bulb to get, and they're not going to want to tear it apart. (As for the P.O., if it's under warranty, that's how I'd fix it, too). Same goes for the handlebar controls - I had a horn button spring break or dislodge - and according to Ducati, I could only order the whole unit - for +$400. So, score one for ebay 3. Cables could always stand to be lubed, IMO. But it could be something sticky in the grip, or a snatch somewhere in the cable guide - starting with the grip itself. 4. Can't think of anything, besides the usual stuff. My suggestion? Since this sounds like a private sale, if you really want this bike, have him take down to the dealer and let them give you an opinion of it. Make sure to mention those issues. If it's the same dealer, ask them (privately) what they know of its history. Ask for service receipts/history from the owner.

Gear problem

Errr... that doesn't sound right. When I had my 620, im pretty sure anything over 80mph would have my tach over 5k. You should honestly be up around there all the time tho. Ducs are much happier in the 5-6k RPM range. It might sound scary at first, but trust me that the engine runs nice and torquey up there.... its the happy place! enjoy.
