The starter motor will not engage

Hi, Paul the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Starter on 83 fxrt spins but wont engage

Check all your connections to starter and battery. If all connections are tight and the starter doesn't engage, it's time for a new starter.

I just replaced a 1979 shovelhead starter (and new housing gasket and oil deflector plate) and the starter just free spins, Help!!

What ever it is it sounds like the starter Bendix isn't engaging. Need to know if it is engaged by a solenoid or centrifugally engaged.

Put in new starter it just spins doesnt engage motor

The starter engages with the starter clutch, normaly when the starter spins and doesnt engage, it is because the clutch bearings within the clutch have worn the machined surfaces causing the clutch to stick and not engage when the starter is pressed

85 bmw starter does not engage it goes zing

probably find that the dog clutch on the end of the starter has given up the ghost, failing that, bmws are critical on the grade of oil used and if you have used a mineral rather than synthetic oil the dog clutch will be gummed up with deposits, sometimes a hot engine flush and new oil(synthetic)will fix it,hope this helps

1985 yamaha xv 1000 starter turs over but will not engage

Can you hear it spin or not? If it is spinning, the starter clutch gears are out. If you cannot, make sure there is power getting to it when the button is pressed. If so, you need a starter, if not, you need to trouble shoot the electrical system.
