Question about 2006 BMW R 850 R

Heated grips on an R850R

Riding in New England I really want heated grips. So I could go buy a new 1200 GS for $18,000 (just looked at Greater Boston Motorsports-sigh) but that ain't going to happen. So I bought a kit to install my own. It requires tapping into a line for power and ground. The head lamp wiring seems like a good candidate, so I found the casing going into the headlamp and opened it up. Can anyone tell me what the 5 wires are? Am I nuts to tap into them?

My '96 R850R has heated grips which I think are original equipment. In the Service and Technical Booklet that came with it, fuse #7 in the junction box is listed as being for the heated handlebar grips. You could see if there's any wiring set up for that fuse on your bike, and it might be a good place to start. The fuses are numbered starting with #1 closest to the left side of the bike, and #7 is a 4 amp fuse.

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. My heated seats and grips will not heat. Fuses are all good. Help!

I am not sure if this will help however the Honda GL1800 experiences a similar problem when one of the heated components you mention fails because they are all wired in series. If one grip goes bad all stop working. Check for open circuit at the individual component connectors. Good luck
