Question about 1987 Suzuki GSX-R 750 H

Recent problem i currently own the 1995 model with a yosh pipe, k&n air and oil filters,with new dunlop 208 tires I really love the bike.But i do have a recent problem .While riding the bike started to lose power and sounding like a 2 stroke motor and hard to keep it idiling now,Can someone help me diagnose this problem

I have just accquired the same bike in showroom condition (less than 150km) Since it has been kept in a display showroom for 9 years, the lubricants and some parts are expired ( although they still look brand new) . I´ll be ordering replacement parts, apart from getting new tires, I have decided to up grade the air & oil filters to K&N,put in a Yoshimura RS3 Can for that extra touch . You saying I should go for O.E. and not risk engine recalibration? I do know that the Carbs on these bikes are tricky... Can you advise me on your tire size too? I´m thinking of going 1 size wider in the front 130/65. Or is the original size good enuf.

Oil is transfering up to the pipe that goes to the intake of the carb. 1985 Harley 1340cc


The pipe you are talking about is the crankcase vent pipe. EPA regulations required that the air vented from the crankcase be run through the carburetor and burned in the engine. If it's a lot of oil and your bike has been sitting for a while, this is common and is referred to as "oil sumping". The reason for this is that when the bike is left sitting for long periods of time, oil will seep past the check ball in the oil pump and build up in the engine case. This is because the oil tank is located higher on the frame than the engine. When the engine is started, the scavenge gears in the oil pump cannot pump the oil back into the tank fast enough and it is blown out of the crankcase vent. If it's just a small amount of oil that accumulates over time, this is also common. Although the pipe has baffles in it, some oil mist still gets into the air filter. Most riders get tired of replacing or cleaning the air filter and simply disconnect the hose down at the crankcase and replace it with a piece of hose run straight back under the engine with a filter on the end of it. Plug the hole in the backside of the air filter.

Handling seems alittle loose


I wouldn't think one as new as yours would have swingarm problems. Have you checked your air shocks lately? The FLHTC has air assisted suspension on the front and rear as best as I can remember.

One other thing, I have heard people complain about Dunlop tires. They say that they don't like them because of that problem. I've never noticed a problem with Dunlops but I ride a Wide Glide. I have recently changed to Metzler 880's tires. They seem to handle well but the braking is not too good on them. The rear tire will lock up and never make a sound. You don't know it's locked until the bike tries to go sideways a bit. Not good.

Stratoliner always tracked perfectly straight now veers slightly to left when I take my hands off handle bar it dosn't seem likely that it is a alienment problem only 4000 miles


Did you change anything ... like putting stuff in a saddle bag? Different boots? Have you cheked air pressure in the tires? Are you sitting on the bike differently?

I'm leaning to tire pressure or uneven front tire wear and it does not have to be a lot of uneven tire wear to act in thismanner.

Please my friend, get this looked at by your Yamaha professional

Getting smooth tires


I like the dunlop elite I just changed mine after 16k miles and probably could have riden them another 2k of so but I had a new set on the shelf

WHAT KIND OF TIRE FRONT AND REAR


I have a roadliner and have the same problem,they only offer two differant bad tires for our bikes,the dunlop and the bridgestone,you could bump up to a 200/55/17 it will fit and wont change the geometry of the bike.I have been waiting for avon to make tires to fit the bike.I havent heard of the conversion to an 18in tire,will have to look into this.

If the particular tires are matched as compatible to your bike, they'll work, even is mismatched as a pair. There are benefits to having a matched pair, such as more even treadwear, and smoother reaction when following road grooves. There are always differences in 'feel' when you switch tires--each tire (even if you are replacing with the same make/model), as a new tire has more tread than the old one being replaced (unless you're replacing due to punctures or other defects).

Will it be a problem? It won't be the absolute BEST possible ride, but really not a problem. As always, with a new fresh tire, be sure to take it easy for the first 100 miles, to get used to the feel, and to wear off the factory shine. You're comfort and familiarity is really the potential problem with a new tire--expect that the ride will be different, the handling, etc. For each major road condition type, be sure to test the behavior. Curves that are banked vs. flat, road surfaces (concrete vs. blacktop), rubberized roads vs. traditional, stopping/breaking, swerving, etc. As you face each condition with the new tire, keep caution at your side.

Tire composition, and analysis is a potetentially very scientific. One could argue for a lifetime, and on paper, these things can be compared constantly, but it all comes down to first hand experience in use. Personally, I prefer to used matched sets when buying new ones, but at the same time, I like to explore the advances and cost savings from a variety of manufacturers. New compositions and designs from the 'off brand' mfgs are getting REALLY good nowadays. I have yet to be really disappointed when trying some of the new brands for my vintage honda. I do try to stay away from the absolute cheapest tires, and always do match tire type (radial vs. bias), and especially, load range and speed ratings. Make sure the new tire matches these three requirements and you'll likely really like the performances vs. an old worn tire.

Replacement tires for 1978 GL-1000


I would recommend the K177 dunlops if you want to stick with the classic look on your wing.

but the Elite 3 is the current replacement for waht you have on the bike.

and the D404 is a real common, inexpesive and fully capable tire for just cruising in the city.

ive been working parts in a shop for nearly 8 yrs. and have had luck with all 3.

also might wanna check into a metzeller if your looking for high mileage out of a set of hoops.

Jackpot tires problem


If your Jackpot has a Dunlop Cruisemax on the front that's the problem. The first two Cruisemax's on the front of my Vegas had to be replaced at 6000 miles. The third tire was a Dunlop 90/90 Elite 3, that tire lasted 12,000 miles

Accelerate tire


I've added all sort of goodies to the bike. Approximatley 1500 miles ago I put brand new Dunlop 404 tires on the bike. The front tire still looks brand new. My problem is the rear tire. It's already in worse shape than the tire I replaced. Tread depth for new Dunlop 404 is 9/32. The tread is slick in the middle 3 inches of the rear tire. My first reasoning for the accelerated tire wear was to much air. I've always kept 36 psi in the tire which is what is recommended. I checked allignment (by wrapping fishing line around rear tire and stretching past front) and it's only 1/8th of an inch off. I don't think 1/8th is enough to cause the tread to wear that fast and I'm not even sure how you would align the motorcycle due to being shaft and not chain/belt. The local yamaha dealership balanced the tires when they replaced with my old ones. Thanks for reading and would appreciate and advice. Also I've used as many as three pressure guages at one time to make sure I was putting 36 psi in the rear tire and the arrow of direction is pointing in the right direction and I ride mostly solo. I've never burned out the tires. I've always been easy on the motorcycle and I'm the only driver. Is 1,500 miles all that I can expect to get out of a new tire? If not, how many?,I doubt that it's an alignment problem, but you'll need to check it with a little more accuracy than the fishing line method; keep in mind that the rear tire is often wider than the front which will give a misleading indication. You'd be better off to tape two straight broomsticks to the rear wheel, one on each side, that extend up to the front axle - with the front wheel pointed straight ahead you then measure the distance between each pole and the front fork or other similar symmetric point of reference. But because this is a shaft driven bike, you'd have other more obvious indicators if there was an alignment problem. Excessive freeplay between the shaft pinion and the ring gear, weird noises coming from the rear end (of the bike, not you Wink ), oil leakage onto the rear hub, etc. I'd be more inclined to suspect you had too much air pressure in the rear which caused the wear. Do you use the same gauge to check the tire pressure all the time? Try another one to see if the readings differ and don't go by the scale on the air hose at the local garage, they are notoriously inaccurate. Is the tire unidirectional? Check to see if there is an arrow molded onto the sidewall and make sure it is pointing in the direction of rotation - sometimes even an experienced mechanic will miss this one. Do you do a lot of two-up riding at extended highway speeds? This can accelerate rear tire wear. But at only 1,500km you still should have way more tread depth left than what you have now.,,,
