Real Life experiance, if you ride your bike at high speeds, even with Over Drive engaged, I end up doing about 180~200 miles per 5~5.25 gallons which breaks out to about 36~38 mpg.

Course, slowing it down to 60~65, in OT will get you another 25~35 miles per tank extra. If you need better MPG, suggest the 650 for the job, The litter is solid for rider/passenger, as the 650 is more for the rider only with added mileage clearly in the 40+mpg rating..

From the reports I've read, the V-Strom gets an average of 36 miles per gallon from it's 5.8 gallon gas tank. The fuel consumption is admittedly mid range, but This is concidered one of Suzuki's best entries in sport touring. You can check the stats and revues on this bike at http://www.motorcycledaily.com/06june02suzuki2002vstrom.h... Hope this helps.

I don't work on many Suzuki's so I don't need a service manual. But I believe you will find several at the site below. The site has free PDF downloads. I hope this helps!

Take it to the dealer to have a quick look at it, it could just be either a bit of running in stickyness or they forgot to check something was tightened up properly before you got your hands on it. Failing that, try an oil additive such as Slick50 in the oil tank, a fuel additive such as Redex in the fuel tank and if the engine's water / liquid cooled (spot the bike expert) stick something like Redline Waterwetter in the coolant tank... and it might feel a bit better (and last longer).
