If you remove the battery from your bike DO NOT store it on a concrete or metal surface, place the battery on a wood or other non-conductive surface. Batteries stored on concrete or metal will discharge over time.

Just got one as a gift. Need to know scheduled maintenance. Type and amount on oil. Type oil filter, fuel filter. Lube points. Everything to take good care of the bike.

Since you got the bike as a gift I would go to a kawi dealer or online and get a full maintance manual as they are not expensive and come in very handy for many reasons.

Starting my bike

The kickstand switch and handlebar kill switch (mentioned above) are indeed often causes of this problem. Try shorting their conenctions with a jumper wire and then see if the bike starts. Another common one on XJ models is corrosion in the wiring. Have you checked/replaced the original fuse box? If not, check its wiring and contacts for corrosion and clean them off with fine sandpaper or steel wool. Do the same for the wires connecting the battery to the circuit, the ground wire to the frame, the wire to the solenoid/starter,etc.
