Question about 1995 Yamaha GTS 1000

Damn clutch! My clutch has started slipping...but only at like 9000+rpm on full throttle, am planning on trying to bleed out the clutch slave 1st to see if this helps since the fluid is black and the previous owner hasnt changed it in 3yrs of ownership!? Also read an old article saying this is a very common problem and that the only fix is to change to a 2002+ clutch basket etc, this true? I was thinking of going with a barnett clutch kit and getting the updated pressure plate if needed as per the AF1 racing sites recomendation, will this slove my problem if the clutch bleeding wont? Also is it not possible to bleed the clutch normally? rather than reverse bleeding?

If the fluid is black flush the system and get new fluid in there asap. Try that first, it should solve your problem.

check the clutch operation
if cable it is a faulty clutch cable and needs replacing
if hydraulic it will be the clutch master cylinder and needs replacing
if they are both new items then the clutch needs to come out as it could be oil on the clutch plate making it slip

2002 jeep wrangler recently had a new clutch put in,I am starting to have trouble putting it into 1st gear and shifting into 2nd, all other shifting fine.what could it be?


to answers 100% accurately id have to drive it.

but here in net bunny land, cant do that!
but can ask you to post full symptoms.

question 1: can you start car in any gear. clutch held to floor, even reverse )

the slave and mc are a fixed pair in 2002.FSM C6-p9
and on my 2008

the slave and MC are one part and pre filled.
there is no bleeding steps only top offs.

if the clutch drags,(seems it does)
put in a new MS/SLAVE first.

trouble putting
so you are driving
and shifting and moving
and 1>2 shifts are what, grinds, or balks.

can you start engine in any gear (clutch to floor)

can you shift any gear parked ,running, and clutch to floor and not moving. including REVERSE ?
if all are good, cept the 1>2 upshift
that means the clutch is not dragging.
and the #2 synchro ring is worn.
or running the wrong trans fluids.

the newer transmissions are very tricky here.
some are very upset with wrong lube. (or too low or is not black as tar)
or mixing 2 brands, or using synthetic and its so slippery the syncrho fails, (cured many like this)

if all this is true, and clutch don't drag (ever)
then get the car to jeep and have them drain it and fill it with the correct lube and win.


now answer 3:
it might be just the shift linkage messed up
if the 1>2 change balks. (not grind)
on mine boxes i can hear the synchro's spin up.
i can feel them engage, if i cant feel that
then the linkage is bad.

the word trouble does not say what that means.
define trouble putting....

find a shop, a Service tech, that owns a m/T box.
and win.
Some with a/t are clueless...
ive blown more clutches racing than many ever drove.
IMO, and remember it COST YOU NOTHING to ask. (I'm retired early, gin!)

Check that the slave cylinder is fully releasing the clutch (push the clutch fork and shaft all the away back into slave cyl.. If ok replace the clutch assy.

Master or slave cylinder...leakage?? lines..??


I am totally unfamiliar with the particular setup you have, however I know a bit about clutches, Sifting through what you said, it appears that your clutch is set up too tight. By this I mean that the throwout bearing is always pressing on the release diaphram (or fingers) on the clutch cover. As you drive this is causing the clutch disc to overheat and slip. The repeated bleeding you are doing likely has no effect on this other than that the time you spend bleeding is allowing the clutch assembly to cool off. If the slave cylinder is part of the throwout bearing and is inside the bellhousing you need to remove it and get one that is slightly shorter. If the slave is mounted on the bellhousing and activates a clutch fork that moves the bearing you will need to find a means of backing off the slave adjustment so there is a bit of freeplay between it and the fork. likely since you can drive it you are looking at 1/4" or less play to get it right. My only concern would be that you may have overcentered the fingers on the pressure plate and damaged the return spring. slipping the clutch also has not done good things to the disc either. (like driving down the road with your foot on the brake is not good for brake pads)

if the bleeding temporarily helps you may have a bad master or slave cylinder, check the system really good for leaks. also check that your hose isnt pinched or cracked.

89 ranger manual trans slipping already replace clutch and slave cylinder? still slipping any help?


Manual transmissions do not slip ie. when the gears mesh, there is no slip unless they strip out and make an awful noise and will not pull henceforth.

You probably still have a slipping clutch plate against the flywheel. You need to adjust the clutch petal linkage shaft to allow the pressure plate to be release from the thrust bearing, ie shorten the shaft length.. If you and most likely you do just have the clutch release slave cylinder that releases the clutch when you apply the petal. You need to bleed the slave cylinder of any excess fluid or air that may have entered the line if you opened it at any point. You need to bleed it as you would a break cylinder and this should fix ya.

i think youre doing the right thing. they are very stubborn to bleed because the hyd. line goes up high across back of engine before droppiing back down to slave cyl., trapping air. could try to gravity bleed by opening bleeder at slave, cap off of master cyl, full with fluid then it may start to come out after a bit. then try your process again. or can try to bleed at connections further up the line, working your way back to bleeder. hope this helps. be patient.
