Question about 2001 Yamaha FZS 400 Fazer

Tranny swap from 1998 to 2001 possible?

Hello all! I'm new to the board and did a search but could not find the answer I needed so I decided to post a thread about it. I have a fzs 1000 with about 22k miles on it and is currently in the shop for shifting issues. I'm hoping they are going to tell me that it is something simple like my clutch needs to be adjusted or I just need a new clutch. Something in my years of riding tells me its something else. Here's the issue: When I'm in neutral and I shift down to first it doesn't want to go in. I have to rock it back and forth to get it to catch OR I can use the method of finding the sweet spot of where it will catch. Once in gear I can go through all my gears by using clutchless shifting. Down shifting is also not an issue. So I'll ASSUME that my gears are all fine. Its only when I'm in neutral is when it gives me an issue. So I narrowed it down to 3 things, my clutch (needs adjusting or needs to be replaced due to the fibers and whatnot) my dogs/tranny are bad or my shift fork. Anywho, if worst comes to worst and I have to replace my tranny, will a 2001 R1 tranny fit into my 1998 motor?

Yes the later box will fit.put in the gear selector drum and forks as well. i have seen 98s with broken drums but the biggest problem with all of the 98-03 is the selector spring breaking.this can be fixed from under the cover on L/H side without a major strip down. fixed lots with broken springs .they only cost about 80 pense/$1 . hope this helps.

If i fit a new generator it comes with a new stator does the old one have be replaced or do i need to fit the new one have had mixed answers thanks

I suggest you use the new stator with the new armature. The stator is only held in place by a few screws so it is super easy to swap out. Save the old stator for future use ( if ever needed ). Please rate my answer.

Will a Yamaha engine from a Benelli Velvet fit into a Yamaha Majesty? Both engines are 250 and the Benelli is 2001 while the Majesty is 1996?

Bruce, take a few rough measurements from both engines. Measure at the frame mounting locations. If one location measures 6" and the same location on the other engine measures 7" then obviously there is a swap out problem. If the rough measurements appear to be very close it will likely work. The only way to know for sure is to try the swap. It may be possible to cut and relocate a mount or two to adapt the frame for the new engine. Just be sure the chain lines up with the rear sprocket.

Please consider a top rating for this answer. Thanks!

Zzr gear box

I have been a bike mechanic for over 10 years and never seen this one before. The only thing I can even think of is a broken shift fork. This would let a slider gear wander freely and potentially engage a gear while the bike is already in a different gear. This would account for the rear wheel lock up. The 'tight spot' would probably be a torqued and twisted shaft resulting from the lock up.

The repair will be major surgery on the tranny. Personally, I would replace all shafts, all gears and all shift forks. You don't know and can't just look and see what stress has been put on any individual gear. I would hate to see you put in a few gears, put the engine back in the bike, then find a stressed gear dropping a couple of teeth the first time you hit second. To put it another way, get a new tranny and a new chain. The chain was stressed also. Sorry about the bad news.

Ask the dealer what the cost would be to replace the entire tranny but not the clutch. Now Google ' salvage motorcycles kawasaki ' and see what an entire used engine would cost. Chances are the engine swap that you can do yourself will cost less than the dealer's repair of the current tranny.

PLEASE RATE THIS ANSWER. Thanks!
