Question about 1985 Yamaha FJ 1100

Tach moving slowly

Just the other day my tachometer stopped workin correctly. It just climbs real slow and won't go past 4,000 rpms. I think I heard somewhere that sparkplugs will do this but I'm not sure because the bike is still running fine. Also I checked the cable and it looks fine. Thanks

Bad plugs or other electrical problems can mess with an electronic tach. Yours has a cable so it sounds like a mechanical drive. If so, it is probably your drive cable. take it off and pull out the inner drive spring, clean it well, as well as the inside of the outter cable, then either use a light grease or oil to lube it before re-installing it. Check both ends of the drive cable for wear or rounding off.

Tachometer is dead- digital can you tell me, where it connects, so I can check it's source? AND can you tell me how to find the culprit?


1) check fuses
2) check wiring & connectors (you can try to disconnect and connect again your cluster. that could restore bad connection).
If it didn't start or didn't click....check the battery voltage...maybe your battery has died...or you have a short in the system draining the battery slowly.
check your connectors, unplug them and look to see if any have overheated and melted a bit.

Tach only half reading


Hi Anonymous, their may be an issue if you are running a single fire ignition. Contact the folks who made the tachometer. Good luck.

Looking for wiring diagrams for digital tachometer with trim indicators and warning signals. Mine had the plastic trip arm break. No trim reading on Tach face. Replaced trip arm forsensor arm and now have no reading on the tach at all except extremely light tach Number. All other electrical components work OK.

My o5 ,1100 custom started making a noise on the toy run,,but only when I would shift ,,and only when I was moving ,,then the speedometer stopped working,,I limped it home and it was smoking a little...


What most likely happened was that the bushing inside the speedometer - the one where the speedo cable goes in, dried up and seized. This, in turn, probably caused the cable to snap. Now, I'm not sure if you're talking about the speedometer or the tachometer - but it doesn't matter, the result is the same; some high pitched noises, and then nothing.
Do this: take the instruments off so you can flip them over. Then, put a drop or two (but no more) of a light viscosity oil in the area where the cable attaches to the tach and speedo.
Caution: do not use more than one or two drops of oil in each - and no not leave the units upside down for any length of time. Failure to heed these warnings will cause oil to drip onto the instrument faces. Ugly and un-fixable.
Reinstall and replace the broken tach or speedo cables - and you are done.

Top speed


a crash. The reason I ask is with all my mods my bike doesn't stop pulling. If I crack the throttle at 70mph it just climbs. 8090,100,110 with no sign of slowing or mellowing out. But once I hit 110, I get scared of the rev limiter and back off. I mean, if 120 was the true ungoverned top speed, I'm sure the power would mellow off at around 110mph and just slowly inch it's way to 120, right? Anyone with more guts that can shed some light on this subject?? Remember, it's a 750, so your 900cc opinion should differ greatly,i have an 800 so probably just a little difference from your 750. not much though i wouldnt think. first the rev limiter is not so bad. i have not hit it in 6th gear, but have hit it in just about every other gear including 5th. just try it out in a lower gear to see for yourself. it will just kind of cut out. nothing violent. definately makes you wanna ease up or shift up though. mine also pulls very strong up to about 120 mph. 120-130 takes some time. and 130-140 takes quite some time. i have only seen low 140's (speedo indicated. reality is probably about 130 mph as everyone says there is about a 10 % error on the optimistic side) i have run out of road before hitting the rev limiter in 6th everytime. just takes so long to get there. but i would think up to about mid to upper 140'S (again indicated) would be about it. doubt 150 mph could be hit just based on rpms at 140 ish (8000 ish) and how slowly it gains speed on the top end.,,,
