Question about 2001 VOR SM 400

Hot Pipes Hey... I just got my bike delivered yesterday, I am already turning heads. My question is about the pipes getting hot. Mine appears to have a type of guard, but I can still feel the heat through my jeans. Any ideas? I want to be able to take my daughter for short rides, but am afraid she might get her leg burned. I know I will have tons of other questions soon. Thanks

I have the heat shield on my bike, and it has made a world of difference. Is yours installed in the right place? When I first put mine on, I could still feel heat, then I moved it forward on the pipe, and it works great now.

Why is my motorcycle running so hot


Generally, pipes turning blue from too much heat will be caused by improper fuel/air mixture or timing. If the bike exhibited no problems before changing the pipes, my guess would be that you need to readjust your carburetor. This would not be an uncommon step necessary when changing pipes. Might as well check your timing at the same time though.

On my pipes one side is hot and the other is cold


Check the pipe right where they come out of the heads. It depends on what type of exhaust system you have on your Road King. If the stock exhaust is on the bike, the rear cylinder exhaust is directed to both mufflers. With the exhaust from the front and part of the exhaust from the rear cylinders going to the right side muffler, it gets more exhaust than the left side and runs hotter. Like I said, check the temp of the exhaust pipes at the cylinder heads. If one of them is cold, that cylinder is not firing. As long as both of the pipes are hot there, you're fine. Just ride the bike and have fun.

If you did not adjust your EFI (load a different MAP) then you are leaning the bike way out! This is very bad as the bike will often run at an AFR of 14.0+. do not run the bike until you get the fuel adjusted!! You will void the warranty!!!

Exhaust pipes discolored


It may indicate that but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. If the bike sat for a long time while running, the exhaust can get hot enough to discolor the pipes...but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the motor. Improper carburetor settings can make the bike run lean (not enough fuel) which, in turn, can cause a hotter than normal exhaust and discolor the pipes...again, this does not indicate there is anything wrong with the motor. Ask if the pipes are stock or after-market. After-market pipes are a minefield for motorcycle riders. When the manufacturer puts the stock pipes on, they are tuned to the motor to give peak performance which usually results in little to no bluing of the pipes. Aftermarkets can throw the tune off and discoloration is the result. Ask the seller if there have been any changes to the bike...such as after-market pipes, rejetting the carburetor, changing the intake, etc. Most likely the seller will say yes, there have been some changes made. Please note: THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE BIKE IS BAD OR THE ENGINE IS WRONG.

My cbr 929 honda is overheating how do i fix this problem


Check the coolant circuit that does not have air at all kept inside.
With the bike cold and the radiator cap open on the bike's kick stand start pressing again and again the coolant pipes and fill in coolant if you have to.Then start the bike without closing the radiator cap and keep pressing-releasing (like a sponge) the pipes until the radiator's lower pipe start getting hot.Then close the cap and wait with the engine running until you hear the radiator fan turn on.If you reach 227 F (108 C)and it hasn't start turn it off and check the temp switch on the radiator or the fan.
If the radiator's lower pipe never get's hot but the temp gauge shows you the temp reaching above 194 F (90 C) then you have a thermostat problem and you should check your cylinder head gasket too for compression failure.

Clicking noise inside engine, after turnoff


If you have recently changed your pipes on this bike it will make a clicking sound up by the motor Mine does the same thing until the pipes cool off. I have an 02 flstc. My pipes were changed over to Vance and Hines over two years ago and they still click when they are hot.

New bike


as I muck around with the old ones this one is a modern bike in my terms cruiser & sedate parked up beside the B & B Guzzi Racebike!! I'm flat out working the dizzy out on the racer with electronic ignition so now I'm looking at getting some help dealing with the newy. The pipes are standard ( no sound sir) what I'm looking at is getting some louder pipes & I think make it breath a bit better with new pipes! saying this it has a junction thingy pipe under the gearbox which has had it's day big ugly thing!! what's my concerns are replacing the pipes getting rid of the pipes & ugly bits & having a half decent sound it has a computer I suppose & after reading the forums here maybe a updated ECU ?? for the pipe change also I'll get onto Cliff & see if he can suggest something whatever, has anyone done this sort of thing & tell me the pros & cons new chip, black box, ECU or can I get away with throwing on the pipes & suck & seeing?? it could muck up the injection or the box thingy with wires going in & out, any way any help with info about the Cali would be helpfull, it runs ok & when I get time I will be going over it & sus it out a bit better, it's been a long time back on the road again & it even has a horn, I used to riding the Lemans 850s & 1000s so this is a new kettle of fish foot boards & everything shit hey well take it easy don't buggar up my head too much just plain & simple please ,the answer to your question is simple but not cheap. K&N filter at about $120.00-Staintune mufflers at $995.00 and a stainless H pipe of which I can't give you a price as mine was already fitted. These are not the ultimate performance mods but they do give your bike much better breathing.,,,
