000 miles. What is the average wear on the clutch and how often should you lubricate it?The clutch system should be lubricated every 2000-2500 miles. The drive clutch should be rebuilt or replaced every 10000 miles. The cost averages a little over $200 for parts and around $50-$75 for labor. Most owners do their own lubrication. It takes about 30-45 minutes to perform the service.,,,

I just changed the oil in my Honda 750 Shadow and switched to Synthetic Oil. As you mentioned this could cause the clutch to slip. Wel it 's slipping. What's the fix?

I'm assuming that you have a "wet" clutch, unlike most cars that have a "dry" clutch. "Wet" means that the clutch sits in the engine oil, "dry" ... that it doesn't!
It's very important that you use only oil specifically made for motorcycles if you have a wet clutch, synthetic or not. The formulation of the oil-additives is different if it is to be used with clutches.

Using "normal" "car" oil, whether it is synthetic or not, is highly likely to result in clutch slip.

If this is what has happened then I can only suggest this course of action:
> Drop that oil out and replace the oil filter
> Refill with cheap motorcycle oil
> Drive for 10 or so miles, get the engine nice and warm
> Drop that oil out
> Refill with cheap motorcycle oil again and drive 10 miles
>> Hopefully at this point the clutch slip will be gone
> Drop that oil out and change the oil filter.
> Now fill with "nice" motorcycle oil

Best of luck :-)

Tip

DR650 dismantle. Save $$$

A recent motorcycle tear down to 3rd gear, should have required several "special suzuki" tools, none of which I needed, saving nearly $900. To undo clutch basket centre nut, simply take of drive sprocket and use 24mm socket over drive shaft to hold clutch basket still.

Clutch on 08 HD seems to be slipping around 3000 - 3500 rpm

This is part of 5000 mile service. To adjust follow the cable down till you find a boot (rubber) and slide it up,loosen the jam nut 9/16 and turn adjuster towards the jam nut 1/2.Then remove the derby cover (replace o-ring) loosen jam nut 11/16 and turn in the allen screw until it lightly seats and back off 1/2 to a full turn tighten down jam nut 6-10 ft.lbs. put cover on,go to cable mid-control and adjust till you have a 1/16 to1/8 freeplay at clutch lever (use a nickel) squeeze handle in at least three times to make sure ball and ramp seat Good Luck

Signs of a leaking clutch slave?

A leaky slave would be more likely to give a soft lever. What you're describing sound more like a problem with the return bleed in the master. Have you made any adjustments recently?

Clutch basket

but it was not as deep as the original. Did the older bikes have a sallower basket. Mine is a 2005 and holds 8 fibers and 7 steel plates. I can't find any partd lists for the older bikes on the web. First a question. Are you using the original clutch fiber plates and friction disks or, did you get a new pack of plates and disks to go with the new basket. I'll explain my question below. The clutch on the 125 is sort of touchy. I tried various configurations, mainly using all steel drive plates, instead of the combination of steel and aluminum. I was only able to make it work properly using the OEM GG configuration. The 125 uses a different clutch than the larger bikes. (The 200's clutch basket has a different gear on the back, but otherwise it's clutch is the same as the larger bikes.) Make sure your replacement clutch disks & plates are not for the larger bikes. (I recently saw an ebay seller's auction that claimed to be a clutch rebuild kit for the GasGas bikes. It only had 7 friction disks. ) The original clutch for the 125 Gasser had a combination of aluminum and steel drive plates. The friction plates were all the same. The 2005 parts book lists them as being 3 iron disks and 4 aluminum disks. (In my memory, I thought it was 4 steel and 3 aluminum.) If you download and look at the parts book, http://www.gasgasmotos.es/rcs/manual...emotorec05.zip , the 125 clutch is on one of the last pages of the book. (page 48 of 50) BTW. I still have a new OEM GasGas 125 clutch pack in my stock; if anyone is interested. (side note: The clutch push rod for the 125 is only a few dollars. The clutch push rod for the larger bikes is in the $35 range.),,,
