Questions on my new (to me) 500

Picked up my new (to me) 500 today. Very nice bike. Other than some cosmetics (engine cases and hardware) spruce up it seems to be in excellent shape. Clutch cable is somewhat stiff though. Anyone know of a good source and if there is a teflon coated equivalent? Is there a Ducati cable that fits? What is the length? Also

The gauges are in need of help. Tach looks shot and the speedo has a (very) bent needle but otherwise seems to work fine. Battery size is needed as well (amps and physical dimensions).I run a 12N12A battery for lightness (no elec start) Venhill in Surrey UK do fantastic cables off the shelf for morinis & all wop tackle. I'm sure they have a web presence. just spell out exactly what you need. ive had many things from them - often not what I requested.... you can also try http://www.motomorini.co.uk/,,

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. Stuck in gear

The bike has a bent shift fork. This means the engine comes out and must be totally torn down to fix the bad fork. The top end comes apart, the flywheel, electrics, shift shaft, clutch, main drive gear, kick starter, shift drum index wheel assembly all come apart then the gearbox gets split open for access to the shift drum and forks. This is not a job for the home mechanic. You have a few more problems I had best mention.

Most bike shops will not repair a bike more than 10 years old. Your bike is almost 40 years old. At today's repair rates it would cost around $500 to $600 for a shop to do the repair. That is probably more than the bike is worth. I searched the web and found a source for the original Honda shift forks. In round numbers they are $40 each. You should only need one fork. There is so much that should be done, all new bearings and seals, piston and rings, valve guide seals, and valves re-seated. Getting a gasket set could be a problem also. If I personally had the bike and it was really clean and nice, I would fix it up. But bear in mind, I have the tools and know how to do it in just a few hours and all it would cost me is the cost of parts. Paying the shop charges is the killer here.
A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
