Question about 2002 Moto Guzzi California Stone Metal

1 Answer

Running rich Hi all - I have a 2002 cali stone. I have removed the balance box & replaced with a straight pipe. Silencers are Mistral straight-through's (competizione's). Airbox mod done and then K&N air filter installed. Power up from 61bhp at the rear wheel (tested) to a pokier 67bhp. I then bought a powercommander/installation/custom map set up package with dynobike in malton. Spent an hour on that dyno

Getting the map custom made. The bike is running more or less at optimum mixture throughout the rev range and the whole package is just working so much smoother and better - output at the wheel is now 72bhp. but...after all these mods shouldn't the bike be running lean if anything? however that's not the case - either the mixture delivered is rich or combustion is vaguely incomplete as the plugs are BLACK with soot and need a soft brushing every few hundred miles. oh, and there is a sooty deposit from the exhaust.,Hi there, In what you are saying, the bike has been set up for flat out running, (in my thinking) therefore you have to run it flat out, for the bike to run right. It's always a trade off If you cruise at, say 120kph when out riding in the countryside, the bike needs to be set up for that, and the bike will run well, if you start running it at 150 and not resetting it, it will run lean, and the opposite with 100. If the bike was set for 120 and the bike was run well out in the countryside and you had a half hour through stop-start traffic and then pulled the plugs, in my thinking again, the plugs would be alot blacker, if this is your case, i wouldn't worry about it. That's the trade off. Some might say it's FI and it will compensate for this, i'm not too sure about this, and i am not a FI guru, but the machine needs to be programmed and can not be programmed to 'how you feel on the day' on how fast you want to go. Just some thoughts along with Lawrence's which i agree with, but just put in a different way,,,,

The first thing to do is to check the fuel pressure. If it is too high, it will cause the engine to run rich. You may have a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Hey beast, what part of the pipe is glowing? You running straight pipes, if so how long are they? A rich fuel mixture wil cause the pipe on the rear cylinder to get hot like that, most often on hard acceleration, or high speed riding....Also carbon build-up on the inside of the pipes and creates an inferno.

Water is coming out from my tail exhaust pipe Ford Expedition 2003 4X4

When gasoline is burnt the products are carbon dioxide and water:- 2C8H18 (gasoline) + 25O2 (air) ----------> 18H2O (water) + 16CO2 (carbon dioxide) If you take short trips the water content will condense in the cold exhaust pipe and collect in the muffler boxes (silencers). At a certain point the water will fill the mufflers, overflow and begin to dribble out of the exhaust tail pipe. It is worthwhile to occasionally give your car a longer run to allow the exhaust to become sufficiently hot and to evaporate all the collected water. The water is acidic and hastens the corrosion of the exhaust pipes.

Balance box

when I noticed that where the silencer goes into the balance box the weld had gone and it was blowing. I only have a short trip this weekend so it can wait untill Monday but I am unsure what to fit. If I fit an H pipe, will it need the EFI resetting ? How much increase in noise will it generate ? If it means playing with the EFI or a lot more noise I will refit a new standard box. ,I swapped my old balance box for a Mistral H pipe- gives a noticeable boost to the mid-range, and if you keep the standard silencers and airbox won't create too much extra noise. Also looks much sleeker and makes gearbox oil changes easier. I have a spare standard balance box in the garage if you want a one,,,
