Question about 2000 Moto Guzzi California 1100 E.V. - Special
How do I check
Having the engine in pieces for new clutch and chain and fixing the gearbox I guess I should really check out the main bearings and the oil pump while at it. So I tried to wiggle the oil pump shaft and there is a slight radial play but I guess that is OK. I removed the pump and all looked good. Some scoring to the cases but really only cosmetic as far as I can tell. Please tell me if I'm wrong. Now to the crank shaft. With the clutch and the cam chain sprocket removed I have an axial play of some 1.5 mm. That is OK no? I figure it will be fixed in that axis when the rest is in place. I can't feel any radial play at all, front or back. Is that it and all is fine? Or is there some other good way to check this? Should I even remove them and look at the bearing surface? Seems easy enough right now but it's only 55.000 kms,Typically with reciprocating motors if you have a concern it would be normal to lift a cap of a main and a big end to carry out an inspection of the bearing half and the journal. The highest load/wear is on the bottom and there is no need to inspect the top half unless you find something wrong. As a rule of thumb if all is OK refit the old shells. My advice would be unless you suspect a problem or like looking into things leave it alone.,,,
