Question about 1983 Moto Guzzi 850 T 3 California

Clutch My clutch is adjusted just right with about 1/8 play but when i go for a ride the cable seems to get slacker until i cant engage neutral as theres so much play. the clutch also slips when driven hard. any ideas?

If you have not sorted out the T3 clutch problem by now I suggest you drop the swinging arm and take a look at the clutch operating arm and check that its got the right amount of free play also check the spring which sits halfway up the clutch arm and make sure its got some free movement also check the condition of the thrust bearing and the clutch operating arm adjuster screw, if you feel the need to remove the clutch operating arm from the gearbox end cover the arm is fixed to a lug and then held on by a pivot pin with a R clip or whatever, if this pivot pin wont move do not hit it with a hammer you will only break the lug and then have to get it welded back on ,soak it in penetrating oil and apply gentle heat, but again no hammer! it might be worth buying new thrust bearing , spring, etc before the start the job.I have had my T3 for 27 years and your problem appears new to me I can only think that unless your clutch friction plate is really warpped it can only be the adjustment at the clutch arm end. the spring etc could be working ok at rest but under pressure ? ,,,

HOW CAN I TELL IF I ADJUSTED MY CLUTCH CORRECTLY ON 2005 HARLEY SPORTSTER


Hi John, the correct clutch adjustment procedure is as follows: Loosen the jam nut on the clutch cable adjuster and screw the adjuster in about 1/2 " this should give you tons of free play at the clutch lever. Remove the the left footrest, the clutch inspection cover and slide the spring and lockplate off of the adjusting screw. Turn adjusting screw counterclockwise untill resistance is felt then clockwise 1/4 turn replace lockplate and spring, check for proper fluid level in primary and button back up. Back out the clutch cable adjuster untill you get 1/16" to 1/8" freeplay while pulling the clutch lever with your left hand and the clutch cable in the oppisite driction with your right hand. Tighten jam nut and your good to go. Good luck

How do i adjust the clutch on my 2004 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail


Try this:

Loosen clutch cable all the way (so you don't get a false setting).
Loosen clutch push rod adjuster (in center of pressure plate).
Turn adjuster in until it JUST touches.
Back off 1/2 to 1 turn and tighten locknut.

Be careful when tightening locknut that the adjuster doesn't turn also, decreasing play.

Readjust clutch cable, leaving 1/16" to 1/8" slack.

Clunks into gear, cant find neutral while bike is running


Adjust clutch!

Loosen adjuster on clutch cable completely.

Remove round cover on primary cover.
Loosen lock nut around screw in center of clutch plate.
Back off adjusting screw.
Tighten screw until it JUST touches.
Back off 1/4 turn.
Hold in place while tightening lock nut.

Adjust clutch cable adjuster until there's 1/16-1/8" free play at hand lever.

I have a 2006 Dyna Low Rider. The clutch cable is loose and the clutch will not fully engage. If i pull the cable out of the housing, about the same length of the metal cable cover then squeeze the lever...


Adjust the clutch. To do this, follow the cable down until you come to a rubber bellows type cover. Slide the cover up or down to access the clutch cable adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster inward all the way to get as much slack in the cable as possible.

Then. stand the bike as straight up as you can safely get it. Remove the derby cover. In the middle of the clutch assembly is the adjuster screw. Loosen the nut and turn the screw inward until you feel a resistance. DO NOT FORCE THE SCREW OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THE INNER CLUTCH HUB. Back the screw out and back in several times until you get the feel of what you're doing. Turn the screw inwards until you feel the resistance. Then back it back outwards 1/2 turn and lock the lock nut. Replace the derby cover.

Now, go back to the cable adjuster and turn the adjuster barrel outwards until you have about 1/8 inch of freeplay. Squeeze the clutch lever several times and recheck the freeplay. Lock the lock nut and replace the cover. This should do the trick. If not, repost and let me know and I'll tell you how to check the throwout bearing. This will require pulling the clutch release cover off the right side of the transmission where the clutch cable goes into the transmission.

1990 electra glide wont go in neutral when running


Usually caused by the clutch being out of adjustment. Start by loosening the clutch cable at the midway adjuster. remove the derby cover, (over clutch), which will expose the clutch adjusting screw and nut. Loosen the nut, turn the screw in until you feel resistance, no slack in screw, then back the screw out 1/2 to 3/4 turn, then tighten the lock nut. Pull the clutch lever a few times to seat the clutch release mechanism. Adjust the cable at the midway adjuster, holding the cable tight away from the lever. Adjust until there is 1/16" to 1/8" free play between clutch lever mount and the end of the cable housing. Lock the adjuster with the jamb nut and slide the rubber boot back over the midway adjuster.

Loosen clutch cable adjuster locknut and the front of the outer primary cover and turn the cable adjuster inwards until a large amount of free play at the hand lever on the handlebar is recognized.

Remove the clutch adjuster access plug, Loosen the adjuster locknut and turn the screw inwards until it becomes harder to turn (starts to release the clutch) and continue turning 2 more turns to be sure clutch is disengaged.

Adjust all the free play out of the clutch cable by turning the cable adjuster in the front of the outer primary outwards. Do not put any tension on the cable, just adjust all the freeplay out of the cable and tighten locknut on the primary cover.

Now, Back off the adjuster screw at the release mechanism until the clutch is engaged and the screw turns freely. Then turn inwards until it just bumps and then back off 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Locknut the locknut down and install the access plug. There should be about a 1/16" free play at the hand lever.

Clutch wont dis engage cant find nuetra;


You either need to adjust your clutch, you have too much oil in your primary, or your throwout bearing has failed.

To adjust the clutch, follow the clutch cable until you find the rubber bellows near the down tubes of the frame. Slide the bellow up or down to gain access to the adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the adjuster inwards making the cable as short as possible.

Now, remove the derby cover on the outer primary cover. In the center of the clutch assembly you'll see an adjuster screw and locknut. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster clockwise until you feel a resistance. You don't want to force the adjuster screw as you'll start to release the clutch, go in just until you feel resistance. You may wish to do this several times until you get the feel for it. Once you feel the resistance, back out 1/2 to 1 full turn and lock the locknut. Reinstall the derby cover.

Now, go back to the cable adjuster and adjust the adjuster outward, making the cable longer, until you get about an 1/8" freeplay at the clutch lever. Lock the locknut and reposition the bellows. This should allow your clutch to release.

If you have too much oil in your primary, it will cause your clutch to drag and make it impossible to find neutral with the engine running. The oil level should be no higher than the bottom of the clutch spring with the bike standing straight up.

If you're experiencing difficulty shifting through the rest of the gears, You may have lost a throw out bearing. To replace the throwout bearing, you'll have to pull the chrome clutch release cover off the right side of the transmission.

Have to hold clutch to keep bike from dieing


clutch plate adjusment or cable adjustment, it sounds like the clutch is staying engaged, try loosening the cable on the clutch until there is lots of slack init and try to start the bike, if it jerks forward then you are going to have to adjust/replace the internal clutch plates hope this helps

Clutch engages to far from the hand grip


if you follow clutch cable down you will find your mid range adjustment use 1/2 in and 9/16 in wrench and back off now go down to your primary cover and remove inspection cover (where clutch cable goes into primary cover) take off cover and spring hex nut.with screw driver turn adjusting screw counterclockwise until lightly seated back off 1/4 to 1/2 turn replace spring hex lock (spring facing out) go back to mid-range adjuster on cable adjust so you have an 1/8 in free play (you can use a nicheol) to set freeplay at lever pull lever in three times to check and set
