Is black smoke is coming out of silencer, then oil is also ignited along with petrol..This is due to pistol ring is enlarge. So go to some good mechanic and change ask him to have evaluate problem. Tell him to clean piston head and replace timing chain rather than fixing...it will really makes a different in engine sound..Also check engine oil seal(A BLACK CIRCULAR CAP IN ENGINE)..which right side on the up of the spark plug

I am using 10w-40 weight but have oil comsumption should I go to a heavier weight oil? I am in a cool climate.

Hi,
If the engine is burning this oil then going to a heavier oil will not resolve the consumption problem. You have internal engine or seals leaking and these need to be replaced to stop the oil consumption.
One product you can use is a anti-smoke oil which at specific temperatures will stop the oil from being pulled into the engine and burning. But this is only a temporary solution.
Hope this helped

1997 Yamaha YZF Thunderace uses 1/2 quart of oil every 200 miles

Replace standard rings with GTS1000 rings . I had Fzr1000 with same problem , at 187000 kms I pulled the barrels off and found no hone left , it was a smooth bore . Also replaced valve guide seals at this time also . Oil consumption dropped from 1 litre per 1000kms to 1 litre per 8000kms. Bike has now done 308000kms and still uses oil at the rate of 1 litre per 4000kms .
