2011 KTM 250 SXF will not idle

Hi, Anonymous if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 2-3 years old when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and replace the battery.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
6. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
8. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

207 ktm 690 sm..headlight fuse keeps blowing, what could be the cause?

Run the wire far as you can and check for cracks, kinks or scraped away insulation that can ground against metal. I bet you'll find this where it makes a sharp corner or is pinched.

What oil do i use in my KTM 990 sm 08

Thank you for contacting FixYa
KTM has a service bulletin at this link you will find helpful: http://www.ktm-parts.com/pdf/TechBull/TB0802.pdf
KTM's recommended oil is Motorex. You will want to drain you oil with the engine at operating temperature to drain as much as possible.
Replace with: Motorex Power Synt 4T SAE 10W50 (for temperatures over 32°F) and 5W40 (for temperatures under 32°F) Approx. 3.0 L
Hope this helps and please contact us if you have further questions.
Kind regards,
TF

KTM DUKE 690, not starting, engine just clicks, is it flat battery or low oil levels

The battery needs to be in top condition to give enough power to turn that single cylinder engine. Charge the battery properly, not just with a battery conditioner like the Opitmate. When it's fully charged everything should be ok. If not, get a new battery and follow the instructions for charging it. If you aren't using the bike for more than a couple of weeks, get a battery conditioner to keep it fully charged.

Hi there! I want to remove my alarm system from my bike. It is a MetaSystems Defcom3 alarm. Although I managed to disconnect all connections of the alarm from the bike, when I try to ignite, the bike...

Are you connecting like color codes to like? Wires that were cut in order to install the alarm need to go back together as they were originally. It sounds like you're doing the right thing but you might want to double check the color codes to make sure you din't mistake one for another.

KTM 950 sm won't start...starter tries to kick bike over but sounds like it is not getting enough juice...battery terminls and lead wires get very hot....battery is new..so I know that is not the...

The wiring should not be getting hot, but if you are trying to get the engine running with the starter motor and it is not turning the engine over, you need to investigate why the engine is not turning. Put the shifter in top gear and try to push the bike (key off) to see if the engine is free to turn. If ok, remove the starter motor and check the drive to the engine. It may be a broken chain or other interference trouble. Try running the starter with the chain disconnected. If it won't turn (make sure the body of the motor is touching the engine), the motor may be jammed in some way. The other possibility is that the wiring to the starter is grounding out somewhere--maybe the starter solenoid. Hope this helps!

My KTM Duke 690 spun out on me while going no more

Hi Kathy,
Sorry to hear you have had a drama. It is often travelling at low speeds where you may experience problems like this, and come off the bike.
Things to look out for here are loose gravel or sand on the roadway where the problem occurred. This will make the tyres slid out from under you.
If the bike is brand new, another thing to look out for is products like tyre shine that may have been applied to the tyres whilst the bike may have been in the show room. Also new tyres have a wax coating that reduce levels of traction when brand new. you may have dipped a peg on the ground that could have levered the bike over on you also.
Hope this has helped you understand a little what has happened, perhaps get a biker mate, or bikeshop to check it out for you before you go riding again to be sure that there are no contaminants on the rubber surfaces of the tyres.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.
regards robotek

Charged battery.showed charged right away.bike wont start unless

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The description "...series of clicks..." is significant. The battery is not putting out enough current to turn the starter motor. The best way to determine the battery condition is to have it load tested. However, considering eveything else, it would almost always be a failed or about to fail battery.

Incidentally, the alarm has been designed to have minimal current drain when in standby.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
