And i took it down to the shop today just to check something out and in talking to the owner i was told that i was running at too low an rpm most times. i shift from 1st to 2nd at 3k then shift up at 4k for each gear after but he told me i should be getting up to between 5 and 6k as running under 4k could most likely be lugging the engine. i shift the way i do due to firstly the bike having 40k miles on it when i bought it so i'm trying to put as little wear on the engine as i can in hopes of it lasting me awhile, and also just because past 4k the engine really starts getting noisy, i know this is normal, but i just can't help but think it is hurting the engine. is there any real harm in running the rpms a bit low like i have, or running them as high as the dealer said, for that matter is anything below the red line fair game? i just want whatever is best for the engine.,4500 to 5000 rpms and up is the area the bike has quickest reponse. But I only use that range for getting up to speed, then I generally shift to a higher gear and lower rpms. It makes a difference in the mpg. and I can easily shift down for passing. I wouldn't suggest going much below 3000 to 3500 in higher gears. That would be lugging it. You don't want to be in 5th and doing 20 miles per hour.,,,

Not good, too much pressure in crankcase, result from bad piston rings. If you are lucky, there can be clogged rubber pipe from engine to filter case.

Breaking in crf 450 engine

you pretty much can't hurt this engine no matter what you do but most important for all MX bikes is varied engine RPM speed so don't stay full power for long stretches and don't stay putting around for long periods vary your engine speed and gear selection as much as possible for first couple of tanks of fuel.
Ps - once you have done couple of tanks of fuel dump the oil and refill new - everyone forgets to do this! the more often you dump and replace oil the longer your bike will last without need for repair (FACT)
good luck regards Jamie

Ktm 450 09 model Battery loosing charge after an hour ridding will not start on the button. Replaced battery still no good checked voltage when on bike under load it only shows 12.8v any help

12.8 is a good voltage for a battery under load, but that depends on the load. The voltage with the engine running at about 3000 rpm should however be at least 13.8. If it is still 12.8 the alternator is not charging and you will need to get that checked out.

Rough running at high rpm on 1995 honda 1100C2 ACE

Check the condition of the air filter and replace it if dirty. Also, if the spark plugs have more than three or four thousand miles on them, try a new set.

Sounds like time for a new battery. A battery is only good for about two years. Then it starts to loose it's charge quickly and then it will not take a charge. Check the water level in each cell. The water should cover the top of the plates in each cell. No water = no charge. Install a new battery and start the engine. Put a volt Ohmmeter on the terminals as the bike revs to around 2500 rpm. The meter should show 14+ volts. If only 12 or less, the charging system should be checked.

Slow deceleration in neutral

it revs fine but then backs down to idle slowly. Cdsracer mentioned that his cousin's in SoCal also does this.... Is it due to the different dirtbike clutch basket size? Any idears? Something simple maybe?Mine both drop right back down. Sometimes a slight hover at 2200 RPM or so then settles at 2000 RPM (usually only before motor has fully warmed up) ,,,
