Now the manual ive dl'ded say to add abt 1800ml of oil BUT the amount of oil i've dumped is more than 2500ml so any ideas on the correct amount? either the previous owner or the manual? My 05 Manual says 1200mL. I was only able to put in 1L or a bit less before it overflowed the hole for me. So i capped the oil hole and ran the bike for a few seconds to get oil into the crankcase. Then filled the rest. If you put in 2500mL this is way too much. You need to drain it and start over with the correct amount.,

Should I change the transmission fluid on my 2005 dodge stratus? It has120.000 miles.Heard it can cause problems?fluid is clear.Mech thought he smelled slight burnt smell I didnt. shiftsok 1st notable.

oil has additives it it that over time deteriorate so a transmission oil change at 120.000miles would be appropriate
smelling the oil and detecting an odor would be a matter of experience and recognizing the smell
you have options
you can take a sample of the oil and have it analyzed in a oil testing laboratory to see if it is still good ,
change it at a transmission specialist shop ( might fix the notable 1st problem
or let it go and trust that problems will not start to appear
I know that some manufacturers do not recommend changing transmission oil but fresh oil is best for a reliable transmission

When to change oil for the first time

Hi David:
There may be a recommendation in the owners manual.
Depending on how many hours you are running it, I would recommend:
- 1st change including filter after 25 hours (just because there may be some "run in" residue.
- Every 100 hours and at the end of each cutting season. (best not to leave used oil in an engine for long times.

What causes misfire in #1 cylinder

A failed fuel injector will do it also. Compare the injector coil resistance with that of another injector. If it's open or significantly different, the injector coil is bad. The injector could also have a mechanical problem such as a clog.

1996 softail had a carb and ring promblem and gas got into the oil. put new carb, rings, valves and springs honed juggs and ther in good condition. Some gas must still be in the crankcase. changed oil serval...

Well, just like in a car engine, there is no way to change out all of the oil. There's going to be some pockets of oil left somewhere in the engine. I've torn down engines that haven't been run in twenty years and found pockets of oil sitting in the heads and places like that. If you've changed the oil several times, you should be good to go. Did you check the primary case oil? I've seen the gasoline get in there as well. Drain it and add a quart of oil and you'll be fine.

Good Luck

Can changing my oil to a heavier oil reduce a rattling sound from the timing chain?

No that will not work and it can burn out the engine crankshaft and rod bearings. Use no heavier than 10W30W. I have seen this happen 1st hand.

Performance issue

Did you check the ignition timing of the engine before you fire it up? Increase in temperature with increase in load is usually caused by retarted ignition timing.
