In both manuals is 4 to 6mm (1/4). I read this to mean total play NOT 1/4' up +1/4 down for a total of 1/2' play correct? 2 - On the oil filter between the cap nut and the oil filter cover was a copper washer in the oil change kit was an o - ring. The o-ring seems too large it squeezes out from beneath the cap nut using only enough tension to compress the oil filter spring. I reused the copper washer. ( Note: the copper washer for the drain plug was also a little oversized, the large o-ring for the cover itself seems fine. ) Did I order the wrong kit? On the order form it states for Original Bullets made 11/98 & on. I own an '08 cast iron engined Classic. 3 - Can the small copper washers be had anywhere.? Other than these minor items the 500 km service is progressing well !!!!!,Questions 500km service.,,,

Install of new primary and shoe 95 Sportster. Old one had a couple mm play each way, I presume for adjustment when cover on involves shoe being slightly LOOSE?

The first time i heard the noise i was cought in traffic the bike got alittle hoy it sounded like a ball bearing bouncing around when i got back on the road it stoped the bike run fine


Hi Kmercer, could be primary noise. Remove the square inspection cover and check to see if your primary chain adjuster slipped or came loose giving lots of chain slop. Chain should have no more than 1" total up and down play. Next drain the primary oil and check the magnet on the drain plug. Fiber or powder like accumulation is normal but if you find solid metal pieces remove the primary cover and do a through inspection of the chain, sprokets, and adjuster. If everything checks out ok you might want to take it to your local dealer or shop and let them listen to the noise. Good luck

08 yam. raider starts and idles perfectly but stalls out when I put it in gear before I let out the clutch

2. Oil level too high in primary chaincase.
3. Primary chain badly misaligned.
4. Clutch discs warped.
5. Insufficient clutch spring tension.

Primary chain hitting case on clutch housing, cable nearly fully adjusted clutch slips if adjust any more. bad grinding noise from chain hitting case can i adjust clutch any more in housing?


The primary chain adjustment has nothing to do with the clutch. Take the small upper inspection cover off the primary cover and use your finger to check the primary chain tension. It should have 3/8 to 1/2 inch up and down movement in the top run of the chain when the engine is cold. To adjust, loosen the lock nut on the primary chain adjuster on the bottom of the primary case. Turn the screw upward to tighten the chain, downward to loosen. Once set, tighten the locknut.

To adjust the clutch, loosen the clutch cable adjuster as much as you can. Remove the derby cover from the primary cover. Remove the spring and the locknut. Turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise as far as it will go. Turn it back in 1/4 turn and replace the lock nut and the spring. Replace derby cover. Adjust the clutch cable so that you have about a 1/8 inch play at the hand lever.

There is a whining noise from the primary side of engine by the generator is there a bearing on the out side near the cover?


No, the whining noise come from the primary chain as it spinning over the clutch and the sprocket motor.Perhaps the adjustment is too tight,this will cause the noise.Do you check the chain tight through the inspection cover on the primary .You need a 1/2 to 5/8 in free play.

How do you adjust the primary chain 2004 buell blast?


There is a large nut on a bolt under the left side of the motor under the shifter loosen the nut and tighten the bolt in. It requires you open the primary chain access door behind the left foor peg to do so. There should be 1/4-1/2" of play on the chain. This is a GREAT time to change the primary oil too. Make sure you use NEW Harley Primary oil too. It is a specific fluid for the primary.

Remove primary cover 1990 sportster


To remove your primary cover, first, disconnect the battery and drain the oil from the primary. Then, remove any footpegs or shifter mechanisms that might be in the way.

Look on the bottom of the primary cover and you'll see a bolt and locknut. This is the primary chain tensioning device. Loosen the locknut and turn the screws out (downward) to loosen the chain.

Then take the derby cover off. Remove the spring and the locknut from the clutch adjusting mechanism. Remove the bolts that hold the outer primary on. Turn the clutch adjuster screw clockwise as you remove the cover.

When you replace the cover, turn the clutch adjuster screw counterclockwise until it stops. Put all the bolts back in the cover and tighten them. Turn the screw counterclockwise again until it stops and then back off 1/4 turn. Install the locknut, the spring, and the derby cover.

Remove the upper inspection cover and reach in with your finger and check the primary chain tension. Using the bolt on the bottom of the primary, turn it upward (inward) and tension the primary chain to between 1/2" and 5/8" up and down play. Reinstall anything else that was taken off and pour in one quart of primary lube. Reconnect battery.

Is it hard to change the primary gasket on my sportster


No, just drain the primary. You'll have to take anything like shifters, foot pegs, and other stuff that might be in the way off the bike. Then, go underneath the primary cover and loosen the locknut of the primary chain tensioner and turn the screw downwards to remove the tension for the tensioner. Now, take the derby cover off and remove the spring and the locknut. Take the bolts out of the cover and then turn the clutch ajuster inwards as you pull the cover off. The cover will come off.

Then to install the cover, hold it up to the clutch adjuster and turnt the screw counterclock wise as you put the cover back on. Put all the bolts in the cover and tighten them. Then back at the clutch adjuster, turn the screw outwards until it stops. Then turn it back inwards 1/4 turn, put the locknut and the spring in and replace the derby cover. Remove the top plug of the primary cover. Stick you finger in and feel the up and down play of the primary chain. Adjust the bolt at the bottom of the primary upwards to reduce the play to about 1/2" to 5/8" and lock the lock nut. Refill the primary with one quart of primary-transmision lube. Replace anything else you have taken off the bike.
