I was hoping someone could help me with my speedometer. I have a 99' 748 and I recently removed the front tire for maintenance. The bottom part of the speedometer that the axle goes into came of when I removed the tire. So naturally I just pushed the part back into the speedo cable. However

Re: Speedometer Not Working
The speedometer isn't working now. When i removed the tire i noticed the tabs in the rim but all i did was put the round speedo part in.Either you didn't get the notches set correctly or the 'rod' inside the cable isn't seated right. Or the rod broke like mine just did, and will need replacement.,,,

The tire that determines the speed on the speedometer is the front tire. To fix your problem you need to put a TALLER front tire on your cycle. If your front tire is a 140/80x17 you can correct the problem by putting on a 140/90x17 . Going from an 80 profile to a 90 profile should correct your speedometer by almost 5 MPH. Hopefully , you can find a tire that size that is available.
Because the inner cable has to turn and flex as it spins, they can occasionally break, this can be normal wear and tear. other reasons can be rust from washing, incorrect installation when changing tyres, or the outer has been kinked or damaged. Repace inner and outer as a set, apply some light lubrication.
There should be a speedometer drive cable that runs from the instrument cluster to the front wheel of the bike.
- Make sure the cable is connected both at the instrument cluster, and at the speedometer drive gear on the front axle, between the wheel and the fork.
- Ensure the drive cable is not broken - this may not be apparent by simply looking at the outside of the sheath. You may need to remove the cable and ensure that there are no breaks inside the sheath.
- Ensure that the speedometer drive gear is not worn or broken. This will require removing the front tire and disassembling the speedometer drive gear box.
- If all the above items check out, the problem is likely in the instrument cluster, and will require repairing or replacing the instrument cluster.
I hope i responded quickly. The speedometer needle movement is caused by the speedometer cable that runts to your front wheel's gear unit. Check for the cable that goes near the axle of your front wheel and check that its properly screwed. Put the bike on stand and spin the wheel, if it still doesnt responed. Remove the cable, unscrew it near the front wheel axle first and try spinning the small "squared wire" inside, if you still can't get any action on the speedometer. Then chances are either your speedometer cable is cut in the middle or the speedometer display is jammed (unlikely). Remove the cable from the speedometer unit and check that it is freely rotating. Oil it and put back. Next, we need to check for the gear near the axle of your front wheel. Screw the speedometer cable to the gear unit near the axle with the other end removed from the speedometer unit. Spin the wheel and check that the inner cable is responding or spinning.. If it doesnt, then your speedometer gears are worn out. Disassemble the front wheel and bring the gear assembly to the nearest parts dealer for purchase. Normally, they don't sell a repair kit so you'll need to purchase the whole gear assembly.
whichever the case, either you purchase a speedometer cable or the gear unit. Seldom will the speedometer unit be destroyed.
pardon me for not organizing this response as you were requesting a quick solution .. so i answered as quick as i could... hehe. Hope this helps!
