I get nothing from the starter motor but the battery starts to smoke slightly. Havent got a clue what the problem is now as it was fine yesterday. Sorter suggests that something is shorting somewhere but god nos where. All other eletrics are fine lights netutral etc two starter motors and same with both.,probably starter solonoid or the wire between the solonoid and starter motor shorted to earth. Possibly starter relay or starter button but unlikely cos I would expect that to blow the fuse. Disconnect wire 20 (black) from the starter solonoid and see if the battery smokes again when you press the button, or disconnect the wire at both ends and use a multimeter on a low resistance range and measure each end of it to the negative terminal on the battery. It should read open circuit - ie. a very high resistance or no continuity. If it reads low - ie. <5 ohms - the wire is either fouling the frame and shorting out, or has melted thru because it is touching the exhaust. If it reads high and you start to over heat the battery then the solonoid is almost certainly short doen to earth somewhere. I'm gonna hazard a guess and go for the wire touching the exhaust to save time and effort just have a look through the gap between the belly pan and radiator if you can and see if you can spot the wire touching the downpipe.,,,

I have a 1999 Harley Davidson dyna super glide hit a big bump an it shut down and won't start now what should I be looking for

Start with the electrics. Do the lights, speedo, etc "come on" when the key is turned to on? Go to the battery, are the cables connected tightly and not touching anything else? (it is a good idea to remove each cable, clean and re-attach, to ensure good contact). If electrics come up, but the started doesn't turn, check connections to starter, fuses etc. If it spins but wont start, check fuel supply, petcock etc.
It is possible that when you hit the bump (if it was big enough) that the battery moved and hit the frame or something and shorted (blowing a fuse perhaps) So if none of the electrics come up, go to fuses, battery connections, etc. You can also look for signs near the battery that it in fact contacted some metal and shorted. This should get you headed in the right direction.

Suzuki RF 900 not starting

First, make sure you check all fuses. You shouldn't have to even remove the starter to see if it is the problem. It wouldn't hurt to clean the contacts every once in awhile. Just trace the wire from the starter switch to the starter, then pull the wires and clean with sandpaper or wire brush.

Bike was working sound, parked it up now no electrics working

Hi and welcome to the site,

Check / replace the 20A main fuse. It would be inside the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the red cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking.

I was out riding yesterday when all of a sudden my bike died all the electrics went! its a 1995 cbr 600f main fuse blew and the voltage regulator was boiling and the rubber encasing the circuits had peeled...

the regulator only keeps the voltage regulated to about 13v charge for the battery no matter what speed you ride..if the regulator did not work correctly you might start to burn out light bulbs. So when you put in the new regulator make sure your battery is at least at 12.3v minimum if not you will have to push start it and ride it for about 15 minutes on an open highway to charge the battery back up to at least 12.6v-12.7v...13v is perfect. (if none of your other fuses blew then all other electrics should work), so i would double check all of your fuses just to make sure.

Honda XR125 L-4 3 month old battery, Bike has engine has started to die, exhaust goes pop (backfire?), engine cuts out all together, battery almost completely dead wont restart bike, starter just clicks...

put a volt meter across the battery terminals, should read over 12v stopped and rise to 13.5v with the engine running.
If the voltage doesnt rise there is a problem with the charging circuit.
Be carefull starting from a car, as this can cause damage to the bikes electrics, as the bike tries to produce enough amps to charge up the car when the bike starts, and overcook electrics.

Christmas tree syndrome (flashing lights and all) is usually the result of a bad earth.
Start at the battery check all earth connections, especially at the motor and froame.
I am sure you will find some corrosion.
Good Luck
