1 Answer

1998 thunderbolt Have a  modified thunderbolt hasn't ran in tree years.    I can start it on start fluid but will not run from tank. Lines are  clear  vaccume piston works . poss vent problem or air leak ? also there is a componet missing.  the negative wire is hanging just of to the Right of the  battery.  I have been working on this bike with my sportster manual(06) so if anyone has a thunderbolt manual or a line on one please let me know as my searches have come up empty at every turn. Also anyone know of an aftermarket tank that fits buell bikes

I would look at possibly rebuilding the carb or at least a good cleaning.  It sounds like there may be some gunk in the jets. As for the missing component it might be the flasher as that sounds like the location to the right of the battery on a mounting tab. I do have the manual I'll have to dig it out.,,

I have a 97 ninja 900. It hasn't run in atleast a year. When I tried to get it started, it took a little effort to get it to fire up. Then it stalled, started, stalled, started. Now it won't even...

I would siphon the old fuel out and replace it; if you didn't add any fuel stabilizer when you last ran the bike, the fuel has probably gone stale. I use stabilizer in all of our lesser used 2 & 4 cycle fuel eaters. It really does seem to help since restarting (especially summertime gadgets, including one car) happens cleanly.

Fi light is on, last time i drove it i ran it out of gas n it has sat awhile but sprayed starting fluid in it an it tried to start.

Fill tank with 93 octane add injector cleaner, you may need to charge battery before your running. All gas has water the older the gas the more water, running out of gass draws the water into fuel lines and injectors. Good luck

No, very unlikely that the battery has anything to do with this problem

When you changed out the battery, did you remove the fuel tank completely or just prop it up??

There are two fuel lines (supply, return) and an electrical connector for the fuel pump that must be disconnected when you remove the tank.

I would suggest taking a close look on the RHS of the tank near the seat and ensure that the fuel pump connector is properly seated and that the fuel lines are properly connected.

Good Luck!

1985 yamaha maxim 700 wont start no fuel. however i have fuel in the lines all the way down to the tee where it seperates in to the carbs. tank appears to have some rust in it and i did replace the inline...

I had the same issue with mine, just recently purchased the bike, previous owner said it ran but has been in storage a year and a half. I filled the fuel filter and everything and it would **** down the fuel but never even attempted to fire. I came to find out that there are two lines that come off the tank, the one without the fuel filter has a vacuum on it. So what we did was pour a little fuel down that line to prime the engine because it dumps fuel straight between the carb and cylinder. Took about 3-4 attempts but it fired and ran, just had to set the idle from there. Hope that helps you.

Ive bought a bike (1998 suzuki bandit thats been standing for a few years starts great but needs a good service whats the best way to go about this) im thinking of emptying it of all fluids (petrol and oil...

run some seafoam through the tank to clean up a little of the crud thats bound to be in the lines and carbs, check all the fuel and brake lines, flush the brake fluid both front and rear, change the oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs. get a shop manual and go from there.

I have an 86 Honda shadow 500 that runs near overheating

A lot of shadows run high on the gauge. I would be concerned if the fan never turned on when in the red /or if the fan ran constantly. You may just have a gauge that reads really high. I ride a Goldwing and totally ignore my gas gauge(it reads empty for half a tank)and my temp gauge many times does not come on at all. My fan does work, but it never kicks in, therefore i am not overheating. Both items are annoying but not worth fixing since they only back up other systems and are mostly there for looks. There are some antifreeze modifiers like "ICE" that are used in racing where antifreeze is not allowed. One of these may help lower a potentially high temperature. But may not be necessary.

I winterized my bike last winter. I drained the fuel tank on my zx 750h. ran the motor to empty lines and now i refilled the tank but it wont start. what am i missing. It fired and ran for abou 10 seconds....

try new spark plugs. and for next winter you're better off not draining everything. best thing is add some fuel stabilizer and run it a few minutes once in a while. empty lines tanks and carbs attract moisture.
