I have the race kit/exhaust.  It seems to run quite lean at low speeds and especially when it is a bit cold.  I have zero experieance with tuning the ECM.  My question

If I get the spy cable download some programs will I be able to adjust it myself?  What's the cure?no need to tune it. since you have an all buell racekit, the ecm is built for your exhaust & filter and should be running almost optimal.i would look into your coldstart and idle speed. maybe you temp sensor is acting up? if not...it may be time to take a reset...,,,

How to adjust idle?


hot engine ?, cold or both,, EFI runs in 3 modes, cold ,warm and hot.

there is no idle adjust, that is the PCMs, job 100%, all the time.

Carbs are gone.

here is rule one for all EFI.

idle is the last thing to work correctly.

anything the causes a gross imbalance of engine power to engine load, under idle will cause , idle controls to fail.



low idling causes. (over 50 but, here ar basics)

1: AFR (air fuel mixture too lean) usually surges. (clogged or leaking injectors. or fuel pressure way to high)

2: air leaks, cause racing, so not that. (speed density car ,if is)

3: egr stuck open. low idle and misfire.

4: ISC stuck closed (IAC electric)

5: cam belt slipped, timing retarded, compression at 1/2 spec, and well, valve will bend soon....

6: CEL glowing running? can be in limphome, limp cancels Idle controls (in may cases) RTM read the FSM on DTCs.



if fails hot?, is hot = 180F temp or more? "thermometer time"

if not, the PCM goes , quite nuts.

hunting or surging ilde. name the 2 RPMS, low and high , is it hot or cold engine this issue.? 400rpm or 1000 or 2000 all are diff.causes.
no year, stated. so cant help.
but ill answer in the generic,
1: the ECU (got a carb,? )
the ecu controls idle speed at all times.
if not , there is a problem (you)
A: air leaks in the induction will make motor race at some point the ECU/ISC loses control. and hunts. trying hard to correct it.
b: egr stuck open idle too low, iSC cant correct it,, bad EGR.
c: engine EFI running way too leak starving for fuel so it hunts for 2 reasons < ISC hunting, and lean does that.
lean is gross power loss and opening throttle bogs the engine.
so is double bad. ISC makes it worse,

all this breaks down to 2 reasons.
1: ISC bad. in some way (gummed up. or restricted inside)
2: bad fueling or air leaks. vacuum leaks.

try answers , the hot cold question and the 2 speeds, of the hunt.
lowest rpm and highest of the hunted range of RPM.

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially


cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller,sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

2011 Honda Activa engine sputters at low speed.

1. Installation of a different camshaft.
2. Different exhaust system or "STRAIGHT PIPES"
3. Faulty advance curve.
4. Multiple carburetors not in sync.
5. Improperly installed jet kit or wrong kit.
6. Carburetor internal malfunction.
7. Fuel mixture too rich.
8. Fuel mixture too lean.
9. Extremely dirty air filter.

Did they reset your TPS? some xb's require it to be reset from time to time. It will cause the issue your describing. Do a google search for buell xb tps reset. there is a good video on youtube from buellxb.com

There's hot and there's too hot. Heat is one of the factors that shorten the life of an engine, especially an air cooled engine. You bike is equipped with the oil jets that help cool the pistons. If it were my bike, I'd take the bike to a known good high performance shop that had a dynometer, an exhaust gas analyzer, and a good mechanic that knew what he was doing with both the bike and the dyno. I'd have them run the bike up through the RPM range and check the fuel-air mixture ratio at various rpm levels. If the bike is running too lean, it'll run hot. Lean is mean but too lean is bad. The mechanic may can richen the mixture up just a bit, say from 14.2:1 to 13.7:1 and reduce the heat while maintaining the performance you want. It's worth a try.

I have a toro snowblower with a 2 cycle engine. When it's just running under no load it seems fine(maybe a little too high of rpm). When it starts throwing snow it gradually slows down until it quits...


It sounds like it is running lean. Back out your carbuerator adjustment screws a quarter turn counterclockwise. These settings should be 1 and a quarter on low speed (closest to engine block) and 1 and a half on high speed (farthest from engine block). These are starting points the adjustment may vary a little eigther way. Never adjust for max rpms that is too lean and will cause engine failure. Hope this helps ya.

Engine starts fine but lacks power until it warms up for 2 to 5 minutes. Carb is ok, replaced head gasket. Just started doing this


If it starts at completely cold to fine tune the high jet adjustment.first off the high speed jet should be initially set at 1 1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed all the way in. next when you do your prestart routine,choke all the way on,primer pumped two times,throttle set at the high speed position,ignition key on,fuel line turned on.(this is my prestartup for my 8hp tecumseh)yours may be slightly different.use whatever starts your machine the easiest! once my machine starts up i can almost immediately turn the choke completely off. i can do that because the high speed jet is opened enough or rich enough for the engine to run.if you adjust the high speed in it will lean the motor out(you found that to be true!) to where it will miss and backfire and eventually quit. start at 1 1/2 turns out and start the engine,once the engine starts if you take the choke off right away use what it does as a guide to high speed adjustment. if the engine quits turn the screw out 1/4 turn and so on.use the very first cold startup as the test for high speed mixture adjustment. at completely cold startup you have the jet adjusted correctly when the engine will sustain itself when you completely take the choke off very shortly after startup. let the amount of choke you need at cold start to keep the engine running be your guide.too lean and the engine will not stay running without the choke at all,too rich and the engine will not pull under extreme loads and will show signs of black soot out the exhaust. you want the jet adjusted so within 5 seconds of cold start the engine will stay running with no choke at all. find that needle setting ( don't ad any more!! ) and you'll be good to go.keep in mind the above is not optimum and is a little rich but you will like the way it starts,stays running,and overall performs as adjusted above.
