Starts popping and I get an occasional fireball out the pipe. I checked the coil and the rectifier both of which are working fine and I put in new plugs in before the test and then swithced them to make sure it wasn't a bad plug. Any ideas? Maybe a valve issue? I think I'd do a compression test now. That might help steer you toward a solution.,

2001 1200 sportster cranks and backfires, carb and fuel good, could it be crank sensor?

Wasted spark system. If fuel and electrical is all good/correct it is often the case in these symptoms that motor cycle spark plugs that although looking good and firing outside of the engine are breaking down and will not fire under compression pressures on a power stroke but will fire unburned fuel on the unpressurized exhaust stroke when the plug again fires in a wasted spark ignition system and when so firing the result is a backfire, usually quite loud.

backfiring through the carb sound like a timing issue, odd though, should me an automatic adjustment, may have slipped a tooth on the cam witch may indicate a bad timing chain or chain tensioner/guide, May also be a serious carb adjustment is required.

Backfiring and trouble starting

If you change the exhaust pipes, you have to sync the carbs (if you cant sync them, you have to change the carb jets), usually it is backfiring because the carbs are not in balance.

81 honda accord runs real rough and backfiring out of carb

That is a car not a motorbike. Bikes only have 2 wheels. But you may want to set up the cam and ignition timing. it is only timing that will cause backfires.

Hi I saw the advice you gave to a gentleman who is looking to buy a 1979 Honda CX500. I am a new rider and I have one but it backfires. I had the carbs rebuilt but it still does this. As I accelerate it...

backfire can come out carb or exhaust--could be runnin to rich-is the float level set rite-jets may be wrong too--1st chec spark plug quality-wires-coil etc for correct fire--but since it kiks in then probly the high speed jet is fine

Had carbs rebuilt on my 1975 Yamaha Xs 650 now the left side cylnder fires infrequently and backfires loudly with new plugs. could this be a timing issue?

If it's just one cyl, then I doubt its timing.
Check to make sure the carb boof is tight and not leaking
also check any vacuum hoses.

My 1400 intruder pops and back fires

I think maddogcycle is right. One cylinder is running rich and the other running lean. It seems as though they have not been balanced properly and the mixture not accurately adjusted. The settings on these carburettors are critical and must be adjusted with the proper gauges. I'd advise you to have the carbs cleaned and adjusted and tuned to the engine for balance of inducted air flow and fuel/air ratio (mixture)
