I have noticed that it smells of gas when it is running. Not really raw gas but kinda of exhausty gas it still as a bit a raw gas smell but it has an exhaust smell too. Also there is some slight smoking coming out of the exhaust pipes. Not too bad but if you look you can notice it. If I goose the throttle up it comes out more and the goes back to being light. Are these two problems related and what could be the cause? ounds like your bike is running rich. Probably wouldn't hurt to have your carburetors adjusted and synchronized.,,

Hi, Michael your bottom end may be filled with gas remove spark plugs and turn over the engine for 30 seconds clean spark plugs that are probably gas fouled and reinstall get the bike running for a couple of minutes then replace engine oil. Good luck and have a nice day.

1994 FXDL Harley plugs keep fouling gas smell strong

It appears that you have what we used to call a bleeder. Where the carburetor leaks gas into the manifold past the jets. I have found instances of this in the 2nd market carburetors especially. It is possible the carb may need rebuilt and gas is leaking past the needle on the float. If not then I would recommend replacing the carb. I have always had excellant results from Mikuni on these big bikes.

I have a 2007 1200 sportster it started blowing black smoke real bad and jumping and jerking as you go downthe road i have changed plugs even swaped the computer from another 2007 sportser i have but didnt...

Next step is to drain the gas tank and blow the gas lines out with compressed air. You may have dirt in the system. If your area has just gone to alcohol in the gas this will act as a solvent for any old gas residue. If you don't know if there is alcohol in your gas, you can smell it and if a sweet smell is present that may be alcohol.
When you say "jumping and jerking as you go down the road" is this when you accelerate or at a steady pace going down the road? How is the power of the bike? Less or the same? Has anything else been done to the bike at the same time that this problem started? Was the bike just put back on the road after winter storage?

Heavy gas smell but no apparent leeks, when starting the bike does not turn over the first time and the clock zero's out then starts on the second push of the button.

Fuel tank on your bike is vented to the atmosphere, and especially when the tank is full it is commom to smell gas.

If the clock zeroes on starting, your battery is weak. Check the battery terminal connections by removing the rider seat and looking in at the battery. Try to wiggle the wires connected to the battery and make sure the connections are tight.

Next, put a small charger on the battery and let it charge up for several hours.

If clock still resets on starting, you will need to replace the battery on your bike.

Good Luck

Hope someone can help.. bought a used think 07/08

I am not certain exactly what bike you have so consider the diagram below as generic. Chances are the float needle is sticking open a bit. A bit of trash may be stopping it from closing fully. The overflow hose is where any "excess" gas is dumped. This hose vents to the open air. Be sure to turn off the gas valve (petcock) at the bottom side of the tank when bike is not in use. Please rate my answer. Thanks!

Re: the smell of gas There is no apparent leaking and the smell seems to be just as strong around the engine as by the exhaust.

thats a good question vibrations sometimes cause this if its not back firing its not the mixture buddy where is the tank breather located it could be this

Bike starts fine with the choke and will idle without it when warmed up. However, when I twist the throttle the engine dies. I have just had a bunch of work done with an independent shop, including...

hmmm, a few posibilities, might well be split cab diaphragms but overhaul should have spotted that. sounds like either too much gas or not enough, either flooding/gassing up or fuel starvation. could try running it without the aire filter too see what happens. it should run weak so if bike is better then you have too much gas, if bike worse then runnig weak to start with. I have seen this before with one particular cause.... petrol tap was leaking, gas runs past pistons when bike not running, soaks past and into crankcases. as breather recycles vapour back in to air box, when bike warm it's as rich sas hell. take of oil filler cap on engine and have a good sniff. you should smell only oil, if it's a strong smell of petrol, change oil and filter, dump petrol tap or see if new seals available.
