And have done more working on the bike than riding the bike. Unfortunately I'm back in that position again of the bike not running after getting it running last fall then overheated and wouldn't start again. I think that I'm going to spend the money to have someone go through my 450 mx and rebuild and update some of the internals. Was thinking of just bringing the entire bike to someone and that way I know it would be ready to go when I picked it up. The bike is in Boise (would be pretty easy to get it to ATK), but am working in Seattle area during the week right now for a while longer. What are the options on this and who would you recommend? ,Since you are in Idaho I would recommend Blackwidow. They are a site sponser. ,,,

I have a 2004 FLHT with 64000 miles the bike is still running very strong should I be thinking of doing any engine work to avoid engine failure in the future.


Not unless the engine is smoking, or knocking or something. It depends on what kind of maintenance has been done on the engine. Evidently, the maintenance has been done pretty well. I've torn down Evolution model engines with more miles than this on them and found the bottom ends to be in very good condition not needing a rebuild. Your top end may need a refreshing. It may not even need boring. I'd check the piston to cylinder wall clearance before I bored it. It may just need a new set of piston rings and a valve job. Don't go jumping in rebuilding your engine just because you think it might need it. Ride it until it quits. It won't cost you any more.

Ive just done a top end rebuild on my CRF250R how long do i have to ride to run it in or is ok to go hard out now as it is only the top end ?


The biggest thing with a rebuild is getting the piston rings seated. Check your oil before every ride to make sure it's where it's supposed to be. Ride easy for a bit to get it warmed up, then feel free to ride it normally. Ride it up and down some hills. Putting a load on the motor and the up and down revving is actually good for seating the rings.

I have an 01 Yz 426 and it needs oil added to it after every single ride of more than 2 hours. Is this normal? I have heard from friends that they to have to do this.


Massive oil consumption is not normal , unless you just have a leaking seal. Even the four stroke race bikes require a regular rebuild. Either is is over due or it was not done correctly. A new piston, ring set, gasket set with valve stem seals, and either a hone or bore should fix it right up.

Check ingine light comes on at high arp


Might be the air cleaner swince giving it throttle makes the light come on. Just might be.

Kick start has no compression but runs fine once i get it going


Does it feel like yhe kick is even engaging and turning the crankshaft? Are you full stroking/kicking it over or short stroking it? when cold, are you using the choke. I suggest taking a compression test when it feels as if it hs no compression It could be undersized piston, rings, or a simple. good luck

No problem just done top end rebuild


Just ride it normally. Avoid super high revs when the bike is not in gear and using the power.
