When i take my battery off the charger in the house hook it up & it only shows 11.5v on the lcd! is the battery fucked? at what voltage would the cdi shut down? im hoping its something as simple as a dead battery (reason for bike not starting) somebody agree with me! before i buy a new barrery, ,but a fully charged 12v auto battery is 13.2V open circuit no less. I would perform a drop test on the batt, and a S.G test with hydrometer. ,,,

Sick of spending money

Hi Anonymous, sadly there are some incompetent shady people out there that just want your money. You have two choices, take it to your local HD dealer, or for $5 go to the following website and download a service manual and fix it yourself. Good luck:

Starts, But Runs Irregularly And is Misses

You do not give a history of what the bike was like until this started or whether or not any work has recently been done or whether or not you keep your air filter clean or have new or old spark plugs or if you use cheap fuel or premium like you should so if you want some help a great idea would be to give as much information as you can OR take the bike to a dealer where they will also want the missing information but at $100 plus and hour can also just spend your money diagnosing without the money and time saving information.

I have a 1987 softail custom that I have been putting alot of money in to try to fix all the problems. I have had starter problems for the past year and finally got sick of it. Harley told me to put...

Did you do anything to change the ignition timing? I know of people that would set their cars ignition timimg by ear. Some of these people must have been deaf because they would have the timing so far off the motor would turn over like it had a weak battery.
And when bikes had distributors they had a lever that worked a cable to turn the distributor so the person could kick start their bike.

Have you removed the spark plugs to see how the starter spins the motor without the plugs? Try it with the plugs out to see how it turns over freely and try it with the plugs in and wires off to see how it spins with no spark but only compression.

Does your check engine light illuminate on the dash, when you turn the ignition on, right before cranking? If it does not light up, at those times when it's hard to start, then the main ecu might be in need of repair.

I have a 2007 yzf600 with 200 miles on it, from day one it was hard to start, i took it to the dealer and was advised that the e85 in the gas clog up the jets and that is why it does not start, $700 later...

DickCanFixIt is right if the bike service was done recently. If done a year ago the dealer is pretty much off the hook. $700 is ridiculous for what they did. Just get a spray can of starting fluid and give a shot into the air cleaner. Add some fuel injector cleaner into the gas and ride through a few tanks of premium gas. After awhile you won't need the starter fluid. By the way, if you only ride the bike 100 miles a year you may want to sell it. As you have seen, they can be a money pit under some circumstances.

Battery appeared dead

The problem you are describing is due to a poor battery connection or a poor ground connection. Take the cables off of the battery and clean both the battery terminals and the cables with emory cloth. Get rid of all corrosion and other crud. Trace the black wire which is the ground to the other end and disconnect and clean it up alsl
