How much to replace clutch on 2007 harley davidson sportster 883 xl

You can get a replacement clutch for about $146 that is a complete replacement of your clutch plates. It has the extra plates to replace that poor designed spring plate that comes standard on your Sporty
-or- you can buy, for about $190 that same clutch plate kit AND includes the clutch spring tool with it. Here is a link, if you are interested in seeing. Still should have the manual to take the case and clutch apart and put back together though. The kit works great! I have replaced several of them for my friends and never had a problem. Here is the link to where you can get them, but feel free to do some shopping around if you like. The link is just where I have found them at a reasonable price and the spring tool is one of the easiest to access the spring retaining ring too. Anyway, here is the link I use to order mine and my friends replacement kits.

Clutch replacement

There is a lot to removing and replacing a clutch on a Harley. It is not hard but does have to be taken apart a certain way, requires a special tool to compress the pressure spring and precise steps and in a certain order to adjust. I suggest you get a manual. Some of the kits you buy (good ones) will come with the spring compression tool and instructions for replacing the clutch (if it does not come with the tool they range any where from about $50 to $90 or so).

I have a broken clutch bearing and icant find the spare

  1. Clutch Lever
    • As the clutch lever is operated over time, it gradually loses its grip on the clutch cable, weakening the clutch lever action until it barely moves the clutch plates. Maintain the clutch lever by ensuring the free play at the lever meets the specifications of the motorcycle's user manual, in which you will also find instructions on how to make this adjustment.
    Clutch Cable
    • Unlike the gradual onset of a clutch lever problem, the somewhat uncommon failure of a clutch cable is instantaneous. With little warning, the clutch lever goes completely slack and the clutch will be inoperable. Keeping a clutch cable well lubricated can prevent failure. However, in the event of a cable failure, a registered dealer should fit a replacement.

    Clutch Plates
    • Problems with the clutch mechanism itself normally manifest themselves in the gear change rather than in the applying and releasing of the clutch lever. Noise, chattering or slipping can be the result of misaligned or warped plates, leaks in hydraulic cables or bearings. Although more serious, if recognized early, these problems will be relatively inexpensive to repair.

Clutch not disengaging

Slippage
  • Slippage is a clutch problem that occurs when the pressure plate is unable to hold the friction disc against the flywheel tightly when the clutch is engaged. This causes the disc to rotate at a different speed than the flywheel. The high temperature caused by friction against the disc will eventually damage the clutch plate and necessitate a replacement. On clutches with mechanical linkage, adjustment can forestall replacement for a time.
If you notice the engine revving abnormally as the clutch is released, and the car accelerates gradually, then it could be a slippage problem. It's possible that grease or oil on the disc is causing the slippage or the engine mount could be broken, causing the linkage to be bound up by an improperly moving engine.
Another common cause of slippage is when the friction plate is simply worn out from use. A clutch will not last forever, and over time the clutch will begin slipping. Adjustments will not fix this problem, as a worn out friction plate will require complete replacement.
Vibration
  • A grabbing or chattering clutch is an indicator that there is a problem inside the clutch mechanism. It is an easily noticed problem. Symptoms include a vibration or jerking as the clutch is released, especially when accelerating from a stop. This problem may be the result of a damaged or broken disc, flywheel or pressure plate. It may also be caused by loose springs or worn engine mounts, according to the Integrated Publishing website on Clutch Troubleshooting.

Clutch will not engage

Have you tried adjusting the clutch cable? It may need adjusting, since before the replacement the gears were engaging.

If the clutch slips and engine gets ahead of the wheels, or you cannot release it to shift, An adjustment should be attempted first. If adj does no good, you need a clutch replacement.
