Question about 2007 Aprilia ETV 1000 Caponord

Changing gears

Every now and then when I am changing gear up the gear lever becomes soft. Say changing up from 2nd to 3rd it will go into 3rd fine but then if I try and shift to 4th the lever just moves up and feels very loose. Drop my foot so lever drops down and then try again

Goes into gear fine. Your boot is most likely preventing the lever from returning to zero. Then when you try to change this will happen. You need to either adjust your lever postion (1 set screw) or remove the bulky rubber foot pads. I have large feet, so removing the rubber pads was almost a necessity. Before doing that, I had to shift up with the little 1/4 bit of sole that stick out from the sides of your boot (if you have cheap boots like me!). ,,,

Big twins can put a lot of stress on the spark plugs when under compression. You may also have a failing ignition coil, or a loose earth on your ignition system.

Some times when i change down from 3rd into 2nd i hit netraul and from 2nd into 1st i get netraul only happens when engine is hot. xl1200r 2006 model

The transmission "neutral" position is located between 2nd and 1st gear. You say you're also getting a "false neutral" between 3rd and 2nd. Since you say you're finding both, it leads me to suspect that you are not being aggressive enough when shifting the gears. The Sportster has the best shifting transmission of all the Harley motorcycles. Since it does shift so easily, riders sometimes "soft shift" the transmission and wind up missing gearshifts. This is the most likely problem, rider error.

Now, there is the possibility that the clutch is dragging but that usually effects the transmission when upshifting, not so much downshifting. With the engine off and switch on, put the transmission in gear, hold the clutch lever in, press the starter button. If the bike tries to move forward, you need to adjust the clutch.

I have a 2000 yz125 and when I shift into 3rd gear and give it gas it kicks it back down to 2nd gear. sometimes I cant get it to shift into 2nd gear. any ideas? thanks

I am presuming you are giving the gear lever a positive shifting motion when changing gears.
If the gear lever is completely tight on the gear shift shaft and the toe of the lever does not touch the engine sidecover when changing up, you may have a worn roller shift lever or loose screws holding this mechanism in place. See the exploded view diagrams of the SHIFT CAM and SHIFT FORK with all part names and numbers on the link below.
Cheers!

Gear selector into 1st gear fine into 2nd gear having to take foot off peg to change gear it is the same through to 6th and back down again, gear change is smooth just far to much space on lever...

If gear selection is difficult it would likely be badly set clutch or a bent gear selector fork. Major strip and repair! If it is slack but easy to select gears then first check that the gear lever or linkage if it has one is tight on the shaft and not sloppy, nine times out of ten this is the answer. If not then it could be slack in the selector system, shims usually being the culprit. Expensive! Hope it is the lever....

2nd gear does not work on my Yamaha Virago xv250

Sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. The slider gear isn't quite engaging into 2nd. If the bend gets worse then you won't get into first and the pedal will get real stiff in those gears. The repair is best done in the shop.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
