If you blew a fuse you could have a grounded wire someplace. Check the wiring on the solinoid, on the battery, on the lights and anyplace there could have been a bear spot rubbed. If the flywheel does not engage check the flywheel gear on the end of the started to see if it is chewed and worn. These can be replaced easily,

You need to instal a starter relay kit.Deere part # AM107421.Mount it down by the starter, purple wire that goes to starter will now be plugged in to the relay, red wire to hot side of starter, black wire to a ground point, purple wire that is a part of new relay can now be plugged in to the starter.its very easy to install and fixes nearly 100% of clicking starter.

The frame of the tractor is the same thing that starter grounds to,so yes ,put the ground any where on the frame or engine block to test the starter. An easier way to test everything is to cross over the large posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver and if it turns then the starter is not the problem. Then you will need to put power from the post on the solenoid that has the battery positive connected to it ,to the post on the solenoid that should come live with the key,if it starts then then you likely need an ignition switch if not you need the solenoid.

Hello Mike, I installed a new Solenoid & starter. According to what I read, connecting a jumper cable directly from the battery to the starter, should activate the starter. Nothing from the starter. I disconnected all wires from the starter & bypassed the solenoid.
try and jump it from a car your battery maybe to weak if your bypassing the solenoid
Battery was OK. But tried another. Same thing. Nothing!!! Sparks came off the new battery when touching the + post. Suspect a short, but it's a brand new starter.
I'd like to know exactly how to get the starter to engage , if it's good.
what brand and size engine do you have?
17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton. Will call them today.
This one really had me going, but figured it out with your help. Battery was reading 12 volts everywhere, but when turning on the ignition, voltage dropped to 8-9. So I tried your suggestion of another battery, & what do you know!!! It started. It was the battery all along. Thanks for all the help.
