Check the heater control valve, when u switch to heating mode, this valve is supposed to open, allowing hot engine coolant into the heater core under the dash, it is not opening the valve, the clicking is the sound from it attempting to open the valve.

its a very common problem, its a part of the heater system called the blend door and its located inside the dash, the ticking noise is cause by the blend door motor constantly slipping on the blend door gear. these are made of plastic hence why they break. BUT there is an american (lhd vehicles) site called heater treater www.heatertreater.net and i am working with these guys and trying to get a blend door made up for rhd models. heatertreater makes theres out of metal, but it is still a painful job to replace them, taking between 4-8 hours. BUT apparently the blend door is accessible from the foot well, for more info go to the website above, they are very helpful. hope this helps.

This noise is the air temperature control blend door actuator motor, it has stripped the little plastic reduction drive gears, this is a common problem on Explorer and the Expedition, in order to change this motor u must remove the dash assembly, the blend door motor is in the approx center of the air distribution plenum between the heater core and the AC evaporator core.

The clicking noise you hear is a stripped out plastic gear from the blend air door motor almost every car maker now uses little electric motors to control heater door panels, put it in the position for it to make noise go under your dash find where it is usually externally mounted remove it and replace it cost about 30 dollars at the dealer.depending on which of the 3 motors its is usually not hard to do.
