Sounds like dirty fuel lines to me. Either that or a plugged fuel filter.

I do not think your car has a throttle position sensor. Yours should have just an old school carburetor. This sounds more like the engine is out of time, or the air filter is stopped up. Check the distributor cap and rotor button for carbon cracks, or worn contacts, check your spark plugs and wires. Check the spark timing. It could be a stuck choke butterfly. Take the air filter cover off and see if the top butterfly is opening and open it up with a pencil see if that helps.

remove the carburator.. It's plugged.
disassemble and soak the body in fresh gasoline for about 10 mins.
Blow out all the ports with small engine carb cleaner and reassemble.
Drain the gas tank , clean it and refill with fresh gas mixture
It doesn't take much to clog those little carbs

You've either got some kind of contaminate in the float bowl or the jets are stopped up on your bike. If it runs as long as you keep twisting the throttle, it's run off the fuel from the accelerator pump. No fuel is getting through the jets. I'd take the fuel line loose and check the fuel flow. If your bike was made after 1996, you'll need a vacuum source to check the petcock as it is vacuum operated. I'd take the carb off and have it gone through as well. Check the vacuum hose that runs from the rear of the carb over to the VOES and the backside of the fuel petcock.
Good Luck

My 2000 XL1200C has started backfiring and kills the engine. How can I remedy this problem?

If your bike is carburetor equipped, I'd suspect that you have a jet in the carburetor that is stopped up or the accelerator pump on your carb is not working correctly.

To check the accelerator pump, remove the air cleaner cover and the air cleaner element. Wtth the bike NOT running. Look into the carburetor and crank the throttle wide open. You should see a stream of gasoline come out of the small brass piece and squirt into the carb in a continous stream from time you start opening the throttle until you get wide open. If you do not see this, you need to remove the float bowl and clean it out and replace the diaphragm in the accelerator pump on the float bowl.

If your bike is equpped with a carburator, it sounds like you carb is not opening correctly. Remove your aif filter. Now, the the bike not running, open the throttle wide open. If your bike has an S&S Super E carb on it, you should be able to see all the way into the intake manifold. You should also see a squirt of fuel as you twist the carb to full open. Once full open, the throttle plate inside the carb should be pretty near horizonal. If not, something is wrong with your throttle cables. Check those to make sure they're adjusted properly. You should have a little freeplay at the throttle grip, about 1/16 of a turn. Just a bit, that's all.
