I can remember if these are AC / DC generators how many wire do the xj and vstar regulators have? in general most regulator can be swaped as long as they run the same current.

SOURCE: Charging system on 2002 yamaha v star.

I posted back in your initial post here. A few ideas to consider/try:

  • normally, there would be 3 wires coming from the stator going to the regulator;
  • AC voltage measured on any pairing of these wires would be higher than 12 depending on the RPM above 1200;
  • DC voltage output would tend to vary from 12 to 13.8/14.2 depending on the RPM;
  • the best check would be to install temporarily anammeter inline with the wire coming from the regulator going to the +terminal of the battery. With this, the presence/absence of thecharging current could be checked.
Cheers.

SOURCE: 2002 Yamaha V-Star Classic 1100 Will not run over 70 MPH

Hi,
The first thing you need to check is the air filter. Sometimes critters can get into the airbox when a bike sits for awhile. Sounds crazy, but it has happened to me. If nothing is blocking the filter, give it a quick clean since you have it out.
Next things to check:
Faulty diaphragm
Improperly adjusted fuel level
Clogged or loose main jet
Faulty fuel pump
You may not be able to check these on your own, but these are the next likely culprits.
Hope this helped

SOURCE: where is the oil filter on my yamaha V-star 1100

On the right side of the bike (right side when ou are sitting on it) just above the rear brake lever behind a small circular plate. remove the plate and the oil filter is inside (you will easily see it). Warning---on these bikes you have to drop the front exhaust header and right floor board in order to change the oil filter unless you install a after market oil filter relocation kit. If you plan on changing your own oil it is highly recommended to install this relocation kit.

How's the battery holding up? Check the voltage on the battery and also check to see if it is bubbling a lot. 13.8V is optimal for the battery charging with the engine running, but up to 14.4 is common. If it's running a lot over that and the battery is making a lot of bubbles, probably the regulator is the problem.

If the battery is low on electrolyte, the regulator doesn't have anyplace to dump electrons, and that could also be a problem, so make sure the battery connections are good and tight, too.

SOURCE: Where could I find a fuel line diagram for a 92

For the fuel pump portion you can go here - http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1992-yamaha-motorcycle-xj600sd-carburetor/o/m8199sch138373

Two hoses come from the intake area under the carburetors - the small hose on the left side (facing front) which is directly under #1 intake goes to the Fuel Petcock vacuum input. The hose under #2 intake goes to the Fuel Pump - vacuum intake (marked with P). The left side of the fuel pump is the input for fuel - the right side is the output for the fuel pump - the hose goes up to the small T input between carburetor 2 and 3. The input for the fuel pump has an inline fuel filter and that runs up to the Fuel Petcock fuel outlet.

Any issues with after market batteries? thanks Bob

Check the voltage with a volt meter with the cycle running should be 14.5 volts or less preferably 14 volts. If it is higher check or replace the voltage regulator. I just replaced mine on a Yamaha 1100 V Star 2002.
