Question about 1988 kawasaki GTR 1000

Kawasaki gtr 1000 1988

Bike wont start relay clicks and power getting to starting motor, also when bike is in gear and clutch pulled in bike is very hard to push are the 2 problems linked??

Check the battery voltage sounds like a bad battery also check the clutch switch

    brand new battery on it and clutch switch is fine also

    Can you pull the side cover off and turn the bike ove by hand ? is it hard to turn over? if so the big end could be seizing making it hard for the starter to turn the engine over .

SOURCE: flicker relay unit on kawasaki GTR 1000

I found a microfiche for the GTR1000 and it looks like the indicator-relay is mounted on the front-fairing inner-frame (fairing stay) on the right-hand side ie next to the headlamp-ish.

125cc Kawasaki dirt bike, cranks on first kick, idles but won't run in any gear, doesn't die out but doesn't seem to engage gear, possible problems?

Does it jerk forward when you put it into gear and die? Or you put it into gear and the bike doesn't move when you let the clutch out? Badly adjusted clutch in both cases. Worst case, you need new clutch plates and springs.

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. See if the motor turns freely by hand to make sure it isn't seized or otherwise jammed. It could be that 1st gear is too low to get the motor turning while you try to push start; you coulsd try 2nd gear. If the motor isn't jammed up, check the electrical connections from the battery and pay special attention to the ground. If the battery is good and the connections all prove to be good, you either have a bad starting relay or bad starter motor.

Hi!!!!! i have an kawasaki zx6r 1998 and it dosent want to start , i started it 2 days ago, but today it dosent want i charged battery, and when i push start button it dosent do nothing, i checked coil...

Check the clutch, neutral and side stand safety interlocks.
Double check that the bike is in neutral, and the clutch is pulled in when trying to start the bike.
If the bike is in gear with the side stand down, the bike cuts off all ignition.
If the clutch isn't pulled in, the starter won't engage.
Check all these safety interlock switches, and make sure you are in neutral with the clutch in when trying to start the bike.

When i engage the clutch and select any gear the bike will leap forward and stall.In other words I cannot pull the clutch in and start the bike.

If the bike hasn't been ridden for a while, select top gear, (engine off) and with the clutch pulled in rock the bike back and forth. That may free the clutch.

It could be "clicking" for three reasons. Poor battery voltage/contacts, no power to the motor or a faulty starter motor due to worn brushes.
The click you hear is the solenoid pulling the dog cog against the starter sprocket.
If the lights stay bright and do not "dip" in brightness when attempting to start your bike, suspect the starter motor itself or cables feeding it. Connect the battery possitive momentarily to the starter motor power contact. Does it spin? If not the motor is without a doubt faulty. If it does, your problem is the power cable from the battery and any ancillary relays.

The bike will not shift into gear. The clutch has plenty of spring tension just will not engage

if the bike has been sitting for a while the clutch plates can stick together, you will still feel spring tension from the pressure plate. two ways to free it up.
with the engine stopped click it up into top gear, put the front wheel against a wall, pull in the clutch, and push on the kick start, or push start it in gear, pull in the clutch and vary the throttle .
Change the oil after the ride with good motorcycle engine oil.

With the bike in gear and the clutch engage, the

Clutch discs are stuck, put the bike in gear, not running, pull in the clutch and push the bike back and forth to break the clutches loose. Once they break loose start the engine put the bike in gear, hold the front brake, and slip the clutch a little to remove any built up or stuck crud on the plates.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On the "...light click..." and no start, initially:
  • externally charge the battery;
  • install and try again and start the bike:
  • if no click, try with the clutch lever pulled in and/or the sidestand folded up;
  • if there is click but will not start, follow the big cable from the battery's + terminal;
  • it would end in the starter relay;
  • press on the start button;
  • determine if the click is coming from the starter relay;
  • short the two big cables/terminals;
  • if the starter motor spins, then faulty starter relay;
  • if not, then fault starter motor, most likely, the carbon brushes.

Postback results of checks/tests.
