I can ride the bike up to 25 MPH and then the check engine light comes on as well as the security light and the speedometer light goes out. The bike runs fine with no problems at all. When I stop at a light the check engine and security lights come back on and the speedometer light comes back on. I tried cleaning the battery cables thinking it might be a loose ground but it still does the same thing. Could this be a sensor that is going off and I don't know about it?

The first thing I would check is the voltage output from the charging system. If the regulator isn’t regulating, the voltage will keep climbing as the engine speed increases. The electronics in the speedometer don’t work well at these high voltages. This would also explain the bright marker lamps. You should be able to see this with a simple voltmeter across the battery terminals.

chek your connection where the alternator plugs into your engine casing & spray it with electrical contact cleaner

If it was stored with fuel in the tank:
1. The fuel filter should be replaced
2. You may to replace the fuel delivery system coming out of the tank
3. Remove the plug in the carb and reset the idel mixture
I just bought one store for 6 years - my issue is the bike will n ot idel but runs on the road like a bat out hell.

Try inside the tach on the connector. But also remove your speed sensor on the transmission and clean it. They pick up metal chips from the trans and short out. Also, HD had a bunch of bad speedos around your year. They replaced them for free. Doubtful they will replace yours at this late date. You might end up buying a new speedo.

unplug your voltage regulator. If the speedometer works while the voltage regulator is unplugged, your regulator is bab.
