Question about 2002 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom

2002 yamaha v-star 1100 rear cylinder is running hot

It seems like the front cylinder is runing much cooler then the back cylinder what would cause this to happen and the bike is kind of choking when i ride it ,it feel like it wants to stall when the Rpm slows to idle but it doesnt stall

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Engine oil level and SAE weight are too low or not circulating.
2. Insufficient or blocked air flow over the engine.
3. Heavy combustion chamber carbon deposits.
4. Ignition timing retarded due to faulty MAP, CKP, or CMP sensor.
5. Carburetor jetted too lean.
6. Leaking intake or exhaust valve.
7. Water coolant old or low change every two years.
8. Water pump failure.
9. Radiator clogged, cap loose or malfunctioning.
10. Radiator fans not coming on.
11. Clutch slipping, brakes dragging, heavy load, towing a trailer etc.
12. Idling too long without moving.
13. For constant hot weather temperatures, mountain, or desert riding conditions consider adding an oil cooler and or cylinder head cooler.

The first thing you need to check is the air filter. Sometimes critters can get into the airbox when a bike sits for awhile. Sounds crazy, but it has happened to me. If nothing is blocking the filter, give it a quick clean since you have it out.
Next things to check:
Faulty diaphragm
Improperly adjusted fuel level
Clogged or loose main jet
Faulty fuel pump
You may not be able to check these on your own, but these are the next likely culprits.

How's the battery holding up? Check the voltage on the battery and also check to see if it is bubbling a lot. 13.8V is optimal for the battery charging with the engine running, but up to 14.4 is common. If it's running a lot over that and the battery is making a lot of bubbles, probably the regulator is the problem.

If the battery is low on electrolyte, the regulator doesn't have anyplace to dump electrons, and that could also be a problem, so make sure the battery connections are good and tight, too.

Here are two solutions for you:
A - Take the carberator off and soak it in some good quality carb cleaner for about 1/2 an hour.  That should take care of any residue in the carbs.
B - Alternatively (and for the less technical minded) there is a great product called Sea Foam.  Try to find it at your local CSK auto/NAPA/Wal-Mart.  Pour a small amount (maybe 1/4 ounce) into each cylinder chamber (take out the spark plugs), try to pour a small amount into the carbs (a turkey baster works great for this), and pour the rest into the gas tank.  Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then start it up.  *NOTE - the bike will start VERY hard at first until it burns through what's in the cylinders.  ALSO the fumes will be EXTREMELY strong and suffocating - make sure you do this OUTDOORS preferably, or at least in a VERY well ventilated area.

What does the starter valve on carbs do

starter valve lowers compression just for starting purposes, many big single cyclinder bikes have them otherwise the compressions too great to kick start them. with yours same idea for the starter, making it easier for the starter to start the bike

Fueling issue running far to lean, choke makes the circuit richer so it will run , lean running causes over heating and serious engine damage if its running red hot, check the plug for white burnt or blistering will show lean running. Compression test to make sure the piston ring and barrel are not damaged over 110psi. Is the exhaust blocked restricted or dented ?

I have a couple of suggestions for you.
Your symptom sounds like your bike is running lean(problem improves with choke).
Add that to your other symptoms & it sounds like your bike is sucking air at the inlet tract(front of carbies).
I recomend that you check that any hoses that may be fitted to your bikes inlet manifolds,arn't damaged or split.
If you find they seem fine,try running the bike,& while it's runnung,spray some WD type spray on the manifolds at the front of the carbies(use the nozzle).Be sure to spray the joint of the manifold where it bolts/is clamped to the cylinder head.
If any leaks are present,the engine speed or smoothness will change(as the WD gets sucked in through the leak & then changes the fuel mixture).
Another way to check is, using a piece of hose(about500mm long)place one end in your ear &use the other end as a probe to search for leaks while the engine is running.If there's a leak you'll hear it through the hose in your ear.
I hope that my guess is right & you should find a leak there somewhere.

I have a 1998 shadow spirit 1100 i replaced the choke cable on it now it seems not to be running correct i hear a slight backfire from the exhaust on the back cylinder i checked the adjustment twice &...

The popping or backfiring is caused by air leaks in the exhaust system and unburned fuel igniting. Try replacing the copper crush o-rings between the head pipe and the head. Seal the air leak and the popping should stop. You can have an exhaust leak start any time any where. Many times exhaust systems are replaced and the gaskets are not replaced causing the popping issues.

My bike will not idle unless the choke is on just a little. i have 2000 1100 v star clasic

I had the same problem with my 2000 V Star 1100. It started out like yours, only running with the choke on a little bit. It got progressively worse. Turned out to be cracked rubber intake manifolds that join the carbs to the cylinders. It happens as your bike gets older. My rear manifold failed first, then six months later, the front one. Mine was bad enough that the bike quit firing on the front cylinder. You may have to take the carbs off to be certain, mine had failed on the inside around the vacuum port. It causes a loss of vacuum resulting in fuel not being pulled into the cylinder from the carb. It's not a hard job, just a pain ! If it hasn't happened already, look for your voltage regulator to fail as well. :o) Hope this helps, Geno

Bike stalls intermitantly but starts back up with choke

any colour differance with both spark plugs

carb is CV type with diapharm may be deterioated, gummed up from cleaners

or water in the carb bowls drain them

other is ignition issues or bad plug

Yes, the problem is likely the "low/idle fuel circuit". There's choke, idle, and hi rpm fuel "circuits" (not as in electrical). The idle clogs first since its small, and the front cylindar seems to go first on this bike. rebuild w/gaskets. 3 hours shop labor = ~ $240. good luck.

il try n help m8,, can i start by eliminating a few things,, have u made sure all 4 carb floats are the same height ,they need to be, ,and there is no holes in the diaphrams at the top of the carbs,,even a pin hole will give u grief,, ,,wot happens wen u pull the choke out wen motor is warm and idling,, if it evens out and pipes warm up then theres a blockage in 3 and 4 carb,and idel jets,or could have a split vacume pipe, or a air leak between the carb and cylinder,,if all fuel symtoms are ok ,, then make sure the coil wires are on properly, and good spark on the coolest cylinders, , try swapping over the coils to to see if the left cylinder becomes cooler than the right,,hope that gives an idea,,

High idle or no start

headlight front signals some fuses; cleaned carbs; repainted. When I received it it was hard to start. Had to kick it into submission and the choke plunger would not stay out. I've since tightened up the choke plunger friction nut and reclamped it towards the carbs (after cleaning the carbs). Problem #1: I can't remember exactly how the clamp is supposed to be positioned on the bottom of the cable: on the metal cylinder? On the indented part of it? And I have a rubber boot on the carb end of it; this boot just slides around and doesn't seem to even fit over the indented end of the metal cylinder. Problem #2: High idle or no start problem: The only way I can get the bike to start cold is to unclamp the cable (tank off) and yank on the cable. As the bike warms up I let the cable go and clamp it down at the point where the choke plate/linkage/butterfly/whatever is completely closed at the carb and no rise in idle is happening. Then I have a nice idle at 1200 +- 100rpm. While the bike starts right up when hot using this setup, it won't start cold unless I go through the rigamarole again. If I clamp the cable in a position so that it will start cold next time, then once the bike warms up and I turn off the choke, the idle falls at 2500rpm. The choke plate is definitely still open at the carb. It almost seems like the cable is wrong for the bike. I seem to need a larger variance in cable length between choke-on and choke-off. I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owners did something funky with aftermarket parts. Help? ,sound like u got both---send it to the mechanic,,,
