Question about 2002 Yamaha TDM 900

Yamaha tdm 900 keeps cutting out while riding throttle sensor replaced under recall but simptoms still happening

Also sometimes when bike is idleing tickover is arratic and bike stalls

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a "LOAD" test if necessary, your battery may show 12.5 volts but have little or zero amps and needs to be replaced.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, points/condenser ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. Fuel tank contaminated with ethanol sludge.
15. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
16. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
17. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the two screws on the outside throat of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. Set the idle speed with the idle screw. This process should get you back on the road.


Since you mentioned uneven idle revs, be sure the carb and manifold are on tight and also tighten the cylinder and head. Air leaks can screw up the idle.

SOURCE: battery replace tdm 850 yamaha

first remove seat then remove tank, unbolt the 2 nuts holding the fuel pump on then disconnect wiring and then wiring from battery remove 2 bolts holding in battery box and remove through whole where fuel pump was (take care with battery wiring).

Idle low stalls stopped


This is usually a fuel problem. The bike is running either too lean or too rich. Check your spark plugs -- if there's black carbon on the tips, the fuel/air mixture is too rich and needs to be leaned out. If they're white, it's running too lean. If they're tan, there's some other issue. Clean or replace the air filters and check your inline fuel filter (if you have one) to make sure there are not clogs or obstructions.

Tdm 900 goes down on one cyl in the rain


Hi, Anonymous you need "FIVE" things in order for a cylinder to run properly: and number 3 is dying to be picked
1. FUEL: in order to validate your not getting fuel spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner and hit the starter button, if it fires up and runs for a few seconds then you know you have a fuel delivery issue.
2. SPARK: remove the spark plug and with it connected to the spark plug cable ground the threads to something metal you should see a bluish white spark if not you have a faulty spark plug, spark plug cable, ignition coil, condenser, CKP, ECM, sensor or the wiring in between.
3. COMPRESSION: you must have at least 80-100 PSI for most bikes if not perform a leak down test you may have a burnt or bent valve or hole in the piston or broken rings.
4. CAM TIMING: confirm your timing marks are aligned to see if the cam chain or adjuster are worn out and the chain has skipped a couple teeth.
5. IGNITION TIMING: on older bikes check to see if your points have not closed up, timing plate has not become loose and confirm with a timing light for proper retard and advance functions, on newer bikes where timing is controlled by an ECM and is nonadjustable check you CKP, TPS, MAP, O2, sensor or it's counterpart for integrity.

not sure about tdm specifically but on most bikes lowering requires longer links

R1 dont keep engine idle after start up


throttle position sensor down? i assume as it being a 07 R1 it has fly by wire throttle bodies? sounds much like a sensor problem rather than a mechanical fault.

Tdm 900 and cutting out in the rain or wet road


Hi Paul. Your model of TDM is known for this problem. The design of the ignition system is poor and allows moisture to accumulate, leading to loss of spark on one cylinder. Hi, Martin_troll and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.

I buy new TDM 900, and first time, after 150 km, happand me to turn off during drive when I wont to shift from 3 trasmition to 2. After same problem happend me 30 times. In service replaced PT sensor but...


Hi, some early TDM's were recalled by Yamaha Co. to change an electronic small part found under the aircleaner under the tank. I had that same problem as yours. But before checking with this part, make sure that when free, the engine revs 1200, and when the engine is warm enough. This should solve your problem. You can adjust the idling speed from under the tank on the right hand side.

Harley Davidson street glide idles low and sometimes dies at stop signs?


Possible cause is a crack in the fuel filter shell which is installed inside the fuel tank. Harley has a recall for affected models. Post your VIN number or go to your local dealer and ask him is there a recall for your bike. All he will need is the VIN number and any recalls will be done under warranty. By the way, not sure of the year of your bike but it may still be under warranty anyway. Other than that there could be a TP sensor fault.
