I just bought a 99 Electra Gilde, it smokes white when I start it but stops smoking when it is running for 5 minutes, is this normal?

Are you sure the smoke is white? White smoke is usually caused by antifreeze burning.(This could be a head gasket)

If the smoke is actually light gray it is oil burning.(This would be rings or valve seals)

If it smokes mostly on startup and then stops when it warms up (It could be a worn valve guide or deteriorated valve guide seal (or possibly several) allowing a tiny amount of oil into one or more cylinders).

If it smokes mostly when you are cornering (It could be too much oil in the crankcase).

The white smoke indicates the need for new valve guide seals. The black smoke indicates that the fuel/air mix is far too rich. Re-jet the carb to stock #137 main jet. Don't mess with the pilot jet if the bike idles okay. No other settings to mess with. Install a new stock plug ; NGK R CR9E

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Check the jet needle clip on the top of the needle. Put it in mid-range. Put the carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine.

I just thought of somthing. You may be creating the rich mix problem yourself. See the following starting instructions.

There is a proper way to start the engine. Four controls are on your bike to assist in starting.

  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

I guess it depends on a number of tings - how many miles has it done? Has it been regularly serviced? Have the oil change schedules been properly observed? Is the correct amount of oil in the bike? Not too much? Has it been thrashed or is it one-careful-lady-owner :)
If it has had a hard life, even though it is a bulletproof engine, the rings could be gettng tired and you are getting excess oil in the combustion chamber. They are popular with the 'drive em hard' fraternity...
Do a compression test to be sure... easy and cheap to diagnose.

Because its a BMW. The white smoke means your need a valve job on head. Probably losing some water thru head also.

After my 2005 dodge magnum sits (lets say overnight) it runs rough and produce white smoke. After several minutes the smoking and rough idling stops. What causes this and what price range to get it fixed


White smoke is a sign of water/condensation (due to the coolant additive)......worst case scenario, you have a head gasket leak (minor at this stage), or you simply need a tune up......as white smoke on cold start up could be normal...has it just started happening, or have you only just started noticing it ???

When was the last time it has been serviced (plugs, oil etc)

I have a diesel engine that expells white smoke for 5 to 10 miniuts after start up? The exhaust also smells rich with fuel? I bought the truck used and am trying to fix the problems! Please help.


When an engine expels black smoke it means that the piston rings are going and is consuming oil. And when the color of smoke is white the engine is consuming more fuel. Both are harmful. Black to the engine and pocket while white to the pocket. It seems that the injector need careful attention.
Cold engine does expel white smoke initially. When the temperature rises to normal working temperature the smoke stops. This is normal in your case. 5 to 10 minutes to warm up is normal for any diesel engine. But any thing more than that needs attention.

White smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting the engine?


Its the problem of oil.The oil is getting burned out. The vehicle is either burning oil or it is moisture in the gas chamber if you notice white smoke from the exhaust. This is a common possibility.but in some cases this white smoke is not due to oil burning.In that case   White smoke from the exhaust is a symptom of coolant entering the combustion chamber. Normally this is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head. And  this is not a common problem must be repaired immediately. You must STOP driving this vehicle or you will cause serious engine damage. you will have to get both this possibilities checked.

White smoke from exhaust too much


If it is steam that means water is getting into a cylinder. Generally this is a blown gasket. One way to test is remove each plug one at a time and turn the engine over. Water coming out of a spark plug hole will confirm. Could be other problems. I had a blown head gasket once and would leave a cloud of steam at a stop light. Unfortunately the car won't run too long and the cylinder would fill with water and stop. Then it was a tow to a garage for repair.

Engine misfire


White smoke usually indicated it's burning antifreeze. Check your antifreeze level and oil condition before anything.

Water vapor coming out of the exhaust at initial start-up is normal; that is condensation that collects when the engine is not running. White smoke at start-up depends on a couple of things. Tell me, where do you live? When the weather is very cold, all engines will emit steam (white smoke) when they are first running; this stops after the engine has been running a while and is warm.

In short, if this is only happening at first start of the morning and goes away over time, there is nothing wrong.

If, however, the "white smoke" continues and never stops, you may have a blown head gasket.

You have to determine why it is smoking and what the smoke means. White smoke almost always means you have coolant entering the combustion chamber. The exhaust will smell sweet. I am not referring to the white smoke you see when it is cold and stops after awhile, as that is condensation. I am talking about white smoke you see when it is not cold. Stop driving the car immediately or you will have serious engine damage.
Black smoke is the result of an overly rich fuel/air mixture and can be caused by many things.
Blue smoke is an indication the engine is burning oil. Normally caused by worn piston rings.

Puffing white smoke is a sign of a blown head gasket. Coolant is getting into the cylinders.
