Turn both the air screw and throttle screw inward until they LIGHTLY seat. Now back each one outward one and one half turns. This is the factory setting. I am going to give you a web site where you can download a free PDF factory service manual for a YZ450FR. I believe the model is a bit different but the carbs are the same.

Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual. The site may take up to 25 seconds to fully load the list of manuals. It is worth the wait. www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp The service procedures are there in detail and a lot of diagrams and photos. Don't mess with the pilot screw unless you have to, Part #11 in the diagram.
Can I get a Very Helpful" rating out of this?

SOURCE: Carburetor on yamaha xj700 maxim x

Actually, they're not Hitachi carbs. Since you have a 1985 "Maxim-X", the model number is actually XJ700XN. The XJ700 does indeed have Hitachi carbs but your bike, the XJ700XN Maxim-X has BS33 Mikuni carbs.

Careful with the model number, the XJ700 and the XJ700X are entirely different bikes.

By the way, if you want more answers about your Maxim-X, feel free to visit the "Maximum Maxim-X" web site at www.maxim-x.com and the lesser known FTP site for the Maximum Maxim-X web site at www.maxim-x.com/pix

My maxim x water cooled 1985 700 c.c. how do i adjust the idle

If you look under the carburetor rack you will see an oversize screw hanging down. When you turn that screw it will raise or lower your idle by adjusting all the carburetors at the same time. It is part number 34 on the microfiche carburetor page. You can view the diagram at bikebandit.com.

Will not start when hot? 1985 XV 750 virago yamaha

Clean air filter and set sparkplug gaps at 0.8mm. Replace if overly dirty. Without using throttle or choke at all, set idle at 1000 revs using idle adjuster and then turn air mixture screws in or out to find the higher revs. Reset the idle adjuster back down to 1000 revs. If problem not fixed, move the throttle needles up one notch on each carby. (the link below has an exploded view of the carburetor and name of parts for reference) Failing this you maybe in for a top end service as the valve seats, cam faces or compression rings maybe at their wear limits.
Goodluck and Cheers.
