When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

Have you cleaned it lately? If not that's what they sell those cans of compressed air for. With your computer off bloe the air through all of the vents you can locate to get all of tha accumulated dust that is blocking the airflow out of there!

If your comfortable with disassembling the machine then i suggest you Clean the CPU, HSF and apply some clean Silicone. Also there are fan controllers available for download which will force the fans to full speed. Failing all of that you can buy Antec or similar Notebook coller fan which sits underneath it with a large quiet fan to keep it cool.

Have you called Gateway? This is definitely a mother board or CPU problem, both probably caused by a slow acting fan. Gateway should replace these.

I bet that you had your laptop on all the time.
Your heat sink is saturated with dust and grit.
you may have to open up the unit and use a can of dust remover to clean the fins on the heat sink out. it is causing your CPU to shut down bucause it is becoming overheated.

I have a compaq presario f700 and it never overheated until one day i played a game on ninjakiwi.com called SAS zombie assault 2. Now when i listen to music on windows media player or watch videos on...

Insufficient information, but try this for starters:

Make sure the laptop sits on a hard surface and the fan vents are not covered/clogged.

1) Run windows only on a fully charged battery and see if it overheats
2) If not, run media player only, and look for the same

If it overheats in either step, you have a hardware/software problem.

Hardware problem could be that the fan has failed completely and needs to be replaced.

Software problem could be incorrect fan settings, although I do not think you can turn the fan OFF on a laptop.

IF the laptop overheats in Step 1, I would definitely suspect a hardware problem. In that case, run the laptop but do NOT log into windows. Go into the BIOS (check fan settings in there, if there are any).. leave it running in BIOS and see if it overheats then.
