Question about Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Classic Motorcycles

My 1994 harley heritage developed a miss and backfiring problem.

The sparkplugs, leads, coil, ignition module, points were all repalced. the bike ran ok for a short time then the problem returned. does anyone have advice. thanks.

Hi John, and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap to close or to wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Damaged wire or loose connections at battery terminals especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
10. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
11. Damaged carburetor or intake seals.
12. Loose or dirty ignition module connector at crankcase.
13. Faulty MAP, CKP, and or CMP sensors.
14. Incorrect valve timing.
15. Weak or broken valve springs.
16. Damage intake or exhaust valve.

95 Evo, new plugs, new wires, started backfireing like a machine gun, front cyl. no spark at plug sometimes - would this be the coil, have not ohmed the coil yet . Thanks

The fork oil is a very specific job needing a manual and a special tool, I don't want to insult anyones mechanical knowledge but if you have never done it before, best to take somewhere else. Engine oil on the other hand is easy, the drain tube to any softail is on the right side by where the frame meets the swing arm, has somekind of plug in it. Start and run bike for a little while, long enough to get it warm but not hot. Remove fill plug and then remove plug in drain line. Using a peice of cardboard or something put in between filter and frame , directing the oil to your drain pan instead of where ever it goes. Put 1 qt oil back in (after everything is reinstalled) start the bike and make sure the oil light goes out, when it does shut bike off and fill to the point that when it is standing upright you get a little oil on the tip of your finger, over filling may result in loss of oil cap from pressure (been there)

Sorry, again far away from my expertise but if you have a pick up/can sensor with electronic module you should not need another electronic ignition module. I am not clear on what you do have. I also do not know why anyone would go back to points and condenser but if you did you would have to have ignition without any electronic modules. unless you tried to incorporate some kind of CDI system operated with points. I wonder if you cannot find an after market complete ignition system for what you are trying to do. I do not know how much you know or understand about primary or secondary ignition wiring or how the coil works. The coil usually has current to it at all times unless and until the points open or a transistor opens or cuts the flow of current to ground which collapses the primary current into the secondary windings which induces the high voltage to spark the plug. So, whatever system you have or devise it must do that. It must be able to control the current flow through the coil primary windings by cutting it off at the proper time to induce a spark at the correct time. Points do this by opening and transistorized or electronic ignition do this with semiconductors or transistors.

In your case you have direct ignition since your engine does not use a distributor. There is an ignition module that takes data from the cam and crank sensors to decide when to fire the coils.
There is a problem in the circuit of the module that manages spark timing. The module is what the coils are bolted to.
The module and harness would need to be tested, which requires a shop manual for the procedures.

I am Having the same problem can anyone tell me the solution. 1994 Audi A100 2.8L engine wont start no spark at plugs and all seem ok Petrol seems to work electrics seems ok


If you can physically see there's no spark at the sparkplugs then you need to check the HT leads(spark plug leads), resistance should be no more than 14 Kilo Ohms per foot of cable! If they're ok check the coil pack for signs of arcing to earth(very common in these cars!) and if they are getting a 12 Volt supply from the ignition, if ok then check the amplifier which is screwed to the top of the air filter housing to see whether voltage is getting through from there, if ok check the crankshaft position sensor! (Also a common fault on these) Has your vehicle got an immobilizer? These when activated, disable the engine control unit and stop the signals from getting to your ignition amplifier module!

Car was running a little sluggish, changed plugs and car ran great for 45 minutes then started running rough. checked ignition module, coil packs. all ok. replaced wires, ran better then started running...


Make sure the HT leads are secure. They might be popping off, causing it to not fire on one cylinder. I always change the plugs and leads at the same time to keep them the same age. HT leads break down rapidly and need regular replacement.

No spark at spark plugs so wont fire new battery all connections and grounds seem good was sitting for 3 months and ran at that time someone had turned on key and ran down the bat. so replaced but now have...


Check the coils first, leaving the key on may have burnt out part of your ignition system.
Easiest way to check coils is to pull one lead off, plug a spark plug into it. Run a hot wire from the positive side of the battery to the coil ( Do Not Plug it in!!) . If you flash the wire on and off the power side of the coil it should make a spark jump across the sparkplug ( don't forget to earth the base of the plug.)
If the coils are ok, see if you can borrow a CDI unit to try in your bike ( it is good to have mates with the same brand of bike )
Don't forget to check all fuses first and make sure the "Kill Switch" on the handlebars is on.

90 2.3L calais 2 and 3 cylinders missfire (wet).Change plugs,coils,ignition module,housing,computer etc. 2 and 3 still miss. Compressures and fuel injections are ok. Anyone has a idea? Thanks!


Hmmmm...
This evening when it starts getting dark, open the hood, start the car and look under hood & look for sparks from the sparkplug cable to engine ground. Or sparks near ignition module. Look especially close where the cables are "bound" together with a "finger" cable mount ( I forget what you call that).

This may sound silly, but check the cable routing to be sure that cable #2 & #3 are not swapped.... really...

By the way, inspect the old ignition module for a hairline crack. And don't mark anything with a lead pencil (carbon arc).

Hello,

Remove both sparkplugs from engine. Plug them back in the sparkplug cables and let them rest on the engine.
Make sure your battery is well charged.
Check for sparks while kick-starting...
Interchange the sparkplugs in the cables:
-Same plug give sparks: replace the spark plugs.
-Same side of engine sparks: interchange the low-voltage connector at the ignition coils.
Give it a try:
Same engine side sparks: Replace the defective ignition coil.
Other side of the engine sparks: Check the circuit harness for loose connectors, and/or Clean-replace the breaker points ( left side of the engine carter ).

Burning out the pickup coil in 1986 F-150 w/302


Hello genobeano: My name is Roger and I will give some information that should help. When you replace the pick up coil also replace the ignition module. The ignition module will short out the pick up coil. If the module is attached to the side of the distributor be sure to use die electric grease when installing the module on the distributor. Should you not use the grease you will burn up the ignition system. By the same token should the pick up coil short out the module will burn out. The fact it runs for a short time says that you have a heat problem. Normally is in the ignition system. There was a tech bulletin to replace the pick up and module as a unit to correct the problem.
